Welcome to the Department of Architectural Engineering at Penn State. Our Department has a long and distinguished tradition dating back to 1910, and is widely acknowledged as the premier AE program in the country. Our program has very strong links to the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. We have an outstanding group of faculty and staff that provide a highly conducive atmosphere for excellence and innovation.
The primary mission of the department is to prepare students for successful careers in professional practice and to conduct research in the design, engineering, and construction of buildings with special emphasis on high performance green buildings. High performance green buildings are energy efficient, healthy, productive, and safe facilities that reduce the environmental impact of the built environment through the use of integrated systems and appropriate materials. This is increasingly important as the world addresses the challenges of climate change.
Architectural Engineering encompasses topics from various disciplines, including architecture, construction engineering and management, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, and lighting/electrical engineering. Our graduates apply scientific and engineering principles to the design and construction of buildings and building systems, and are equipped to work in a variety of roles in design, construction, government, education and other industry sectors. They are very highly sought after (often receiving multiple job offers) and most of our alumni are active in the delivery of high profile facilities both in the US and around the world.
This Web site contains much useful information for students (current and prospective), industry partners, prospective faculty and staff, alumni and friends. We thank you for your interest in our Department and I would ask that you feel free to contact us if we can help you in any way. You are also most welcome to visit our beautiful campus at University Park.
