Proposed Curriculum F.A.Q. (1-20-2006)

  1. General
  2. AE 401, AE 402, AE 404
  3. CMPSC 201
  4. EE 365, EE 425, EE 461
  5. ARCH 44, ARCH 442
  6. AE 439 and AE 475

General

Can I change to the new 2006 Program if I am assigned either the 2001 or the 2005 Program?

Yes. Students may petition to adopt a new program. See Sharron Williams in 225 Engineering Unit A for the petition.

If I choose to do one part of the new curriculum change (as with taking AE 404), do I have to do the whole new curriculum?

Yes. All or nothing. (Substitutions may be necessary until new proposed courses are offered in fall 2007. AE 404=AE 401+AE 402; AE 457=AE 555)

What if I have some of the courses done already?

You may adopt the new curriculum and have some courses under the old format. You will graduate with more than 160 credits.
Cmpsc 201- extra 3 credits
Arch441/442 – extra 2 credits
AE401/402 – extra 3 credits

What happens to classes that are being rearranged with less credits and classes that are changing from required to optional?

If a student took the higher credit version of a course (prior to credit reduction), the "extra" credit(s) will be assigned to the "others" category on the degree audit and will not count towards the required 160 credits for graduation under the new program.

Can I use the deleted courses as Department Electives?

Maybe.
Yes, if the course is listed on the pre-approved department elective list. (e.g. AE 439 and 475)
No, other deleted credits will not apply as departmental electives. These credits will appear in the "other" category in the degree audit. The grades of these credits will count toward your cumulative GPA.

Do these new curriculum changes affect the integrated masters program (IP)?

Only that the BAE credits are reduced from 168 to 160. Hence the IP credits go from 180 to 172.

If I decide to follow the new format of the curriculum, will I have to take classes over that are being redone?

No.

AE 401, AE 402, AE 404

Can a current third-year non-structural option student take AE 404 instead of AE 401 and AE 402?

No. Current third years must take AE 401/AE 402. AE 404 will not be offered until Fall 2007. Students who are 4th or 5th year in the 2006-2007 academic year must take AE 401 and AE 402. If the student changes to the 2006 program, 401+402=404. The extra 3 credits will go to the "other" category.

What if I took AE 401 or AE 402 and decide to switch out of the structural option?

Student with one of the two courses must take AE 404 and the other credits of AE 401 or 402 will not count towards the program's 160 credits.

I'm going to Leeds - what do I need to know about AE 401, 402 and 404?

Nothing is changed for Fall 2006. This is an unresolved issue for Fall 2007.

What should the third years do this spring?

Take AE401 or AE402 as scheduled. AE404 is not available till Fall 2007.

CMPSC 201

Can a third-year not take CMPSC 201?

Yes, if the student adopts the new curriculum when it is approved.

If a student already took CMPSC 201, can it count towards some other requirement?

Not in the new curriculum's 160 credits.

If a student took CMPSC 201 already and got a poor grade, can they adopt the new curriculum and not count their previous CMPSC 201 grade?

No. Grades will stay on the transcript for all courses taken.

Can a fifth year student graduating in fall 2006 not take CMPSC 201?

This is risky at this point. Approval may not be in time for these students.

EE 365, EE 425, EE 461

Who has to take EE 365 or EE 425/EE 461?

No one. The EE department requested that AE students not be required to take these courses due to a lack of prerequisites. For each 3-credit EE course NOT taken, substitute a 3-credit department elective course. A petition is required.

What if a student would like to have a rigorous electrical background?

The student may take EE350, EE365 and EE425 as department electives. Student must respect prerequisites listed for each course.

ARCH 441, ARCH 442

Will ARCH 441 and ARCH 442 be less work because of the reduction of credits from 4 to 3 each?

The work load in these courses are defined by the architecture department. These course currently do not have an extremely heavy workload.

AE 439 and AE 475

If I take both AE 439 and 475 would both courses count under the 2006 program?

Yes. They are both department electives for all AE students.

Are the BAE/MAE students required to take AE 439 and 475?

No. The previous requirement has been removed and the department elective will satisfy these credits.
