Reinstatement to Degree Status

Baccalaureate degree students who have been dismissed from degree status for unsatisfactory scholarship may request reinstatement to degree status under certain conditions described below. A student dropped from degree or provisional status because of poor scholarship may take a maximum of 12 credits per semester in nondegree-conditional status. Credits thus earned may be used to fulfill degree requirements but are applied toward a degree only after the student is reinstated to degree status by the College of Engineering.

A student may be reinstated to degree status only if, in the judgment of the College of Engineering, academic conditions justify such an action. Evidence that academic problems have been overcome can be demonstrated by the successful completion of credit courses offered by the University (Resident Instruction, Distance Education, Continuing Education, World Campus) and through discussion with an adviser. The conditions for reinstatement to degree status are specific to academic units.

To be considered for reinstatement to degree status in the College of Engineering, the following conditions must be met:

  • The number of grade-point deficiencies falls below the number at which the student would be dropped again from degree status. The table describing the number of deficiency points that will initiate a drop action is below.
  • The number of grade-point deficiencies is reduced by at least a half of the maximum number.
  • Any criteria specific to the student.
  • Completion and submission of the form "Request for Reinstatement to Degree Status" found online at Forms and also available from the Engineering Advising Center in 208 Hammond Building, University Park.
  • Students who meet the above conditions will be considered for reinstatement to ENGR status if their cumulative GPA is less than 2.00 even if they were in a major at the time of the drop action. When their GPA reaches 2.00, students must request a "Change of Major" to the major from which they were dropped. Students may be reinstated directly into their major if their grade-point deficiencies have been completely eliminated at the time the request for reinstatement to degree status is made. In other words, the cumulative GPA must be at least 2.00 for reinstatement directly into a major.

At the same time as the reinstatement request is being made to the College of Engineering, a reinstatement application must be submitted to the Office of the University Registrar along with a reinstatement fee. The registrar's reinstatement application includes the re-enrollment request.

    Criteria for Drop Action:
