BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

The medical community, increasingly dependent upon technology for the delivery of quality health care, relies upon biomedical engineering technicians to maintain these machines in accurate and safe working order. Their tasks include functional and safety inspections, preventive maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, equipment repair, and the training of hospital personnel in the safe and proper use of the equipment. Classroom and laboratory portions of this program focus on the service and repair of electronic patient monitoring systems, exposing the student to a broad spectrum of biomedical equipment through a ten-week practical internship in an approved health care facility.

BUILDING ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

The Building Engineering Technology Program has two options:

  • Architectural: Students in the architectural option will work as architectural engineering technicians under the supervision of a graduate architect or architectural engineer, translating sketches and design concepts into working drawings and specifications.
  • Building Environmental Systems Technology: Students in the this option focus on designing and maintaining healthful, comfortable environments, in all types of buildings, at the lowest possible cost. Graduates of this program work on specialized facilities: laboratories, computer clean rooms, spaces subject to a wide range of climatic conditions, and many new alternatives, such as microprocessor controls, variable speed fans, and thermal storage systems. While most graduates prepare design drawings for new buildings, sizing the components and locating them within the structure, the full range of career paths in the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) field is available. This is an exciting and challenging field with some of the highest starting salaries.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

Electrical engineering technicians generally assist engineers who plan, design, construct, install, operate, test and maintain electronic or electrical power systems and devices. In the electronics field, technologist jobs often involve the manufacture, installation, operation, design, and repair of a wide range of electronic products.

Many electrical technologists work in and with electrical utility companies and heavy industries where they are involved in electrical power generation, power distribution, and machine control. Electrical technologists are often involved with the installation, operation, and maintenance of computer equipment and instrumentation. Many electrical technologists also work in technical sales.

MATERIALS ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

Materials technicians analyze and create materials for other engineers to use in their products. Materials technicians carry out hardness, tensile, compression or nondestructive tests, or special problem-solving projects that require failure analysis. Other duties may entail preparing or examining samples under a microscope, using materials specifications or blueprints, or working out heat-treating procedures. The Materials Engineering Technology Program places a unique focus on powder metals, ceramics, and composites.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

Graduates of the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program become engineering technologists who work as machine, product, and process designers; computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) operators; personal computer integrated manufacturing specialists; planners; technical sales people; production supervisors; laboratory technologists; and managers.

NANOFABRICATION MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY

The Nanofabrication Manufacturing Technology Program teaches students how to work with devices measured at nearly an atomic scale. Students in the program receive a broad foundation of theoretical and practical knowledge in the areas of nanofabrication manufacturing, electrical and electronic circuits, digital circuits, nanofabrication manufacturing equipment, processing, and testing.

There are two options within the program:

  • Nanomanufacturing Engineering Technology gives students a broad view of the field.
  • Nanomanufacturing Science focuses primarily on biotech and biomedical industries.

PLASTICS ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

The Plastics Engineering Technology Program is distinctive in the rapidly growing field of plastics. The program is designed to prepare graduates for careers as engineering technicians qualified to set up and operate plastics-processing equipment, troubleshoot processing problems, manage a production line, and provide technical service and support. Because of the highly focused nature of the program, graduates are able to assume positions of responsibility and be immediately effective with a minimum amount of further training.

SURVEYING TECHNOLOGY

Government agencies and private industry are potential employers of students from this program. During their two years of study, surveying technology majors learn the elements of surveying as applied to construction, land, topographic, geodetic, city, and photogrammetric surveys. Course work is planned to give students an appreciation of the skills and equipment necessary to perform precise measurements in the field, then develop an understanding of the relationship between the precision of measurements and the interpretation of data. After completing the requirements of state registration boards, many graduates become registered land surveyors.
