Financial Aid
The College of Engineering is not directly involved in any matters of financial aid, such
as student loans, federal and state grants, or work-study. All applicants to Penn State, regardless of campus
location, should refer to the Office of Student Aid
for that information. The College does administer endowed and corporate scholarships for engineering students
based on criteria that include major, interest, merit, and financial need.
Scholarships
- FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS: All students who are offered
admission to the College of Engineering as first-year students are automatically considered for
scholarships. No applications are required. Scholarships are offered on the basis of academic
credentials and in general, without regard to financial need (the Office of Student Aid makes
awards based on financial need). The Undergraduate Scholarship Committee ranks the students
who have been offered admission to Penn State and extends scholarship offers
in March to those whose academic credentials show that they have the highest potential for
achievement. This potential is determined by the Undergraduate Admissions Office and is
based, in part, on a student's high school record and SAT scores.
- SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIPS THAT REQUIRE AN APPLICATION
PROCESS: If you are a volunteer firefighter, or are interested in student organizations,
or your parents are from IBEW Local Union #98, or you have been awarded the Snyder Memorial Award,
or you are from one of these Pennsylvania high schools: Monessen High School, Nanticoke High School,
Union City High School, Glendale High School, Yough High School, or Frankford High School, you may
qualify for special scholarships. Go to Scholarships
for a listing. These are scholarships for next year's first-year students and require an application
process. Scholarships will appear on this page as they become available for application. Please visit
often. This site will be continuously updated and scholarship information will be automatically
removed after the application deadline.
- GENERAL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CONTINUING STUDENTS: All
students in the College of Engineering are automatically considered for general scholarships
after they complete at least two semesters at Penn State. No applications are required for these
awards. Scholarships to continuing students are awarded on the basis of the cumulative grade point
average earned at Penn State. The Undergraduate Scholarship Committee will consider all continuing
students, regardless of their major, and will disburse scholarships that are not specific to any
major.
- STUDENTS IN A MAJOR: Each department in the
College of Engineering is responsible for awarding scholarships that are designated for juniors
and seniors in its major. Students should consult with their department head to determine whether
a special application is required for any of the available departmental scholarships in the
spring of their sophomore year.
- SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE: Scholarships are
part of the admissions offer to the Schreyer Honors College for first-year students. These
scholarships are not from the College of Engineering but are directly from the Schreyer
Honors College. Consideration for admission to the Schreyer Honors College as a first-year
student and for an offer of a scholarship is based on a separate and independent application
to the Schreyer Honors College. Go to Schreyer
Honors College for information about admission and scholarships.
