Judging Criteria

Judging will be based on a 100-point scale broken down into the following categories:

GENERAL IMPRESSIONS (40 points)

  • Theme (0 to 10 points)
  • Rube Goldberg Spirit (0 to 10 points)
  • Verbal Explanation / Description (0 to 10 points)
  • Team Chemistry (0 to 5 points)
  • Submitted Machine Description (0 or 5 points)

RUN RELATED (60 points)

  • First Run Task Completed (0, 10, or 20 points)
  • Second Run Task Completed (0, 10, or 20 points)
  • Facility of Machine Flow (0 to 10 points)
  • Rube Goldberg Style Steps (0 to 10 points)

PENALTIES

  • Description Length (–5 to 0 points)
  • First Run Length (–10 to 0 points)
  • Second Run Length (–10 to 0 points)
  • Human Intervention (–3 points each)
  • Objects leaving machine (–5 points each)
  • Teams are judged on two runs of their machine. Teams have the option of voiding one of their first two runs in favor of a third, provided the void is called before the task is complete. Teams will forfeit their opportunity for a third run if both the first and second runs proceed without void.
