SPSEE
Twenty-Sixth Planning Committee Meeting
Thursday, January 7, 1999, 7pm
MINUTES
Members Present:
Harry Bell, Tom Collins, Ray Lunnen, Jack Mitchell, Tom Walsh, Mark Wharton1. SPSEE Trifold - Ray Lunnen
Ray has completed making the suggested changes (from the last SPSEE planning committee meeting) to the SPSEE trifold, and has obtained an official PSU number indicating that it has been approved by Penn State. He has also worked with Faithann to put the trifold into the computer using PageMaker. The result is a stunning 8.5"x11" black and white trifold on marble blue paper (copies to be made at ProCopy on North Atherton). The document is on the computer and can be easily modified and updated for future years. The cost is approximately $26.00 per 100 copies. Tom Collins offered to donate money to SPSEE to cover the cost of the copies.
The SPSEE planning committee unanimously approved the final form and again wishes to thank Ray for all his work on this project!
The original copy on Faithann's computer is in full color. Tom Walsh will contact her to place it on the SPSEE website. Ray offered to be the focal point contact for any future modifications to the document.
Thus, 500 copies will be made so that a few extra copies could be available to hand/send to those who inquire about SPSEE.
Jack Mitchell suggested that color copies be given to the Dean's office and suggest that they use it in their next PSU Engineering Magazine publication.
Thanks again Ray!
2. PSES Undergraduate Recruitment - Harry Bell
Rob Pangborn's training session will be held on Saturday, January 16, 1999, from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at the Nittany Lion Inn. Mark Wharton, Harry Bell, and Tom Walsh plan to attend. About 10 other SPSEE members signed up on a list that was passed around at the last SPSEE General Membership meeting. Those who can not attend the session will be sent the training information. Harry will then sort a list of the top 130 students by region and each of the 13 callers will have about 10 people to call. A contact form needs to be filled out for each student contacted and then the forms are to be sent to Rob Pangborn's office. (Note to callers: When calling, don't forget to mention the EE web page (http://www.ee.psu.edu), and if a student has a special interest, that the caller should contact Jack Mitchell and have him find an appropriate professor in the department to call the student back.)
3. Grad Student Recruiting - Harry Bell
Harry said that 9 people signed up on a list to call graduate students. Harry will meet with Mark Wharton, Jack Mitchell, and Kultegin Aydin (the EE Graduate Program Officer) to come up with a list of the top 20 applicants to call. In addition, the SPSEE Graduate Fellowship funds for 1999 will be discussed.
4. SPSEE General Membership Meeting Dates - Mark Wharton
It was decided that the Spring 1999 SPSEE General Membership Meeting would be held on:
Friday, May 21, 1999
(Note that this is the weekend after graduation and the weekend before Memorial Day).
It was also decided that the Fall 1999 SPSEE General Membership Meeting would be held on:
Friday, October 15, 1999
(Note that this is the weekend of a Penn State home football game against Ohio State).
Both dates were chosen early this year, as suggested at the last SPSEE General Membership Meeting, so that those members from out of town may have a better opportunity to obtain lodging in the area.
5. Alumni Association National Service Week - Mark Wharton
Mark received a mailing from the PSU Alumni Association regarding National Service Week. Mark will request a handbook that they recommend so that we can learn more about it. This may be an activity that SPSEE members from out of town (but would like to contribute their time for a meaningful cause) could be a part of by contacting their PSU Alumni Association local chapter.
