Twenty-Second Planning Committee Meeting

Monday, February 23, 1998, 7pm

MINUTES

Members Present: Harry Bell, Larry Burton, Ray Lunnen, Fred Thompson, Tom Walsh, Mark Wharton

1. Date for Spring 1998 General Membership Meeting

The date for the Spring 1998 General Membership Meeting was set for

Friday, May 15, 1998 at 1:00pm (room to be announced).

NOTE: This is the Friday of Spring Graduation, so if you need to reserve a hotel room, please do so as early as possible. The advantage of having the meeting near Spring Graduation is the hope to increase 'graduating student' attendance and subsequent SPSEE membership.

(Action Item: Tom Walsh will work with Dave Salvia to filter the EE Email Distribution List to be able to Specifically Invite all EE Graduating Seniors and EE Graduating Graduate Students to attend our SPSEE General Membership Meeting.)

2. SPSEE is Number One!

The SPSEE has been named the Number One Affiliate Program Group (APG) of the Penn State Alumni Association! This is a university-wide honor, since we were considered among ALL COLLEGES and ALL CAMPUSES within the University. Specifically, we will receive the

Penn State APG Achievement Award

at the Awards Banquet that occurs during the Alumni Council weekend on Friday, April 24, 1998. Congratulations fellow SPSEE members!

3. SPSEE and AlumniOnline

A new website supported by the Penn State College of Engineering and working with the Penn State Engineering Society (PSES) is being developed that will enable further communication between alumni, faculty, and students.

To be a part of this free service, alumni members need to fill out an online questioneer form that will indicate what level of participation you wish be involved with (this can be increased or decreased at any time). This will be put in a database that students can keyword search to be able to ask quesitons concerning career choices, what it is like to work in the field, etc. This website is very similar to the one proposed by the EE Student Advisory Committee and encouraged by SPSEE.

To learn more about this service, Teri Russilo will be asked to be a guest speaker at our Spring 1998 SPSEE General Membership Meeting.

(Action Item: Larry Burton volunteered to contact Teri. In addition, he will ask Teri to bring application forms to the meeting for attending SPSEE members to fill out on the spot).

As of now, only 100 alumni are signed up and only 10 students have used the service. For this to be a success, we would need to increase the exposure to our SPSEE members (and IPAC members), as well as better inform our students that this service is available.

4. High School Student Recruiting

Mark Wharton and Harry Bell attended the Recruiting Workshop that was lead by Rob Pangborn of the College of Engineering. They received packets of information and training on how to best encourage these highly qualified students to attend Penn State.

Two lists of prospecitve undergraduate students were given to SPSEE by Rob Pangborn. Mark Wharton then divided the names evenly among the five callers (Mark Wharton, Harry Bell, Larry Burton, Ray Lunnen, and Fred Thompson) which worked out to about 25 students each.

NOTE: The Penn State Recruiting Office has all the answers. Thus, WE can call them with a specific question (that was asked by the student during the call), and then have the Recruiting Office call the student back with the specific answer.

Note: For each student that was contacted, a form needs to be filled out and returned to Gary Stonebreaker gdsdo@engr.psu.edu .

Callers are welcome to use the phones in the conference room, 129 EEE on Wednesday, March 4, 1998, 7pm.

5. SPSEE Logo

The SPSEE Logo contest has been narrowed down to 3 designs. The winning design will be voted on by all attending SPSEE members at the Spring 1998 General Membership Meeting. To review these designs, check out the websites by:

and Corey Poncavage coreyp@psu.edu

(Action Item: Tom Walsh will contact both finalists and ask them to be present at our Spring General Membership Meeting. Tom will also ask Corey if he can use SURFACE MOUNTED TECHNOLOGY in his design, as opposed to through hole or leaded parts technology.)
