Twenty-Third Planning Committee Meeting
Tuesday, April 14, 1998, 7pm
MINUTES
Members Present: Harry Bell, Larry Burton, Kevin Kelly, Tom Walsh, Mark Wharton
1. Agenda for Spring 1998 General Membership Meeting
The Spring 1998 General Membership Meeting will be held on
(Action Item: Harry Bell offered to contact Cindy Jones to see if she could help those SPSEE members having trouble finding lodging in the State College area due to Spring Graduation.)
(Action Item: Tom Walsh will send an email to all EE Graduating Seniors, and all EE Graduating Graduate students to invite them to attend our SPSEE General Membership Meeting. Dave Salvia will assist in creating the distribution list to do this.)
(Action Item: Tom Walsh will also make sure that there are SPSEE 'Application for Membership' forms at the meeting for these graduating students to fill out on the spot.)
SPSEE Spring 1998 General Membership Meeting Agenda:
Opening Remarks - Mark Wharton
Mark will talk about the APG award, the SPSEE Fellowship balance, Larry's promotion, and other current SPSEE topics.
(Action Item: Mark indicated that it may be beneficial to increase SPSEE visibility among students/faculty/staff to display the APG award somewhere in the lobby of EE East. Suggestions for the exact location are welcome.)
EE Department News - Larry Burton
Larry will give his highly informative State of the EE Department report. In addition, he will inform the SPSEE members of the EE Department's current rankings compared to other schools in U.S. News and World Reports.
High School Recruiting - Kevin Kelly
Kevin will summarize the efforts of this year's SPSEE contribution to encouraging highly desirable high school students to attend Penn State.
Fortunately, the calls were made before many of the students had already made their decision. The timing for making the calls should be noted for next year's efforts.
AlumniOnline - Terri Russillo (guest speaker)
Terri will formally introduce the concept of AlumniOnline to the attending SPSEE members. This program has lots of promise as a way to increase communication and involvement between Penn State Alumni and current students/faculty/staff.
(Action Item: Larry will ask Terri to bring extra AlumniOnline signup sheets to the meeting so that SPSEE members can fill them out on the spot.)
Kevin suggested that there should be a mechanism to permit EE alumni to help students with career guidance issues, such as working through the IEEE chapter or possibly through this AlumniOnline. Terri's talk should be very informative on these topics.
SPSEE Logo Vote - Tom Walsh
Tom will display each proposed SPSEE Logo using the new EE Department's computer projector system. First, one image will be displayed at a time. Then, all four images will be displayed on the same screen for the best comparison. Both of the EE student designers indicated that they will try to attend the meeting to be able to receive the $50.00 award for the best design.
