Mark opened the meeting at 1:00pm. He had an agenda with 6

Ken Jenkins updated SPSEE on the state of the EE Department

David J. Miller - associate professor w/tenure

John Doherty - tenure (already an associate professor)

New hires

Aylin Yener - assistant professor, communications

Craig Grimes - associate professor w/tenure, EE/MRI joint appointment

Sal Riggio - associate professor (fixed term)

Kirby Chair

PSU's own Tom Jackson was named the Kirby Chair Professor

Enrollment
-
BS numbers are stable (approx 675)

MS numbers have risen recently (up to about 140)

PhD numbers are stable (approx 110)

Research Expendatures

steadily increasing

PSU is still on the low end compared to comparable sized schools

New Activities

EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service)

REU (Research for Engineering Undergrads) -- proposal has been submitted

core course coordinators have been assigned for each of the core EE courses

Topic 2. Undergraduate Recruiting

Harry Bell updated SPSEE about the undergraduate student recruiting
efforts:

103 student names
-
26% were sure they were coming to PSU
-
37% said they may come to PSU but haven't decided yet
-
17% said they were not coming to PSU
-
Number who actually enrolled won't be known until Fall

Topic 3. Guest Speaker: Ken Reeves, Accuweather

Ken, a 1983 PSU graduate (Meteorology) gave an interesting talk about
the locally-owned Accuweather.

Topic 4. Graduate Fellowship Fund Report
========================================
Mark Wharton updated the group on the SPSEE Graduate Fellowship Fund
