Thirty-Seventh Planning Committee Meeting

Wednesday, August 20, 2003

MINUTES

Members Present:       Harry Bell, Larry Burton, Kevin Kelly, Ray Lunnen, Jack Mitchell,
                                    Mark Wharton

The meeting was devoted to planning the agenda for the upcoming 24th General Membership meeting and to planning for the election of new officers.

1.         Meeting Date/Time/Location

We decided to hold the Fall meeting on a Saturday so that working members would be able to attend without having to take a day off of work. The meeting will be held on Saturday, October 18 at 10:00 AM, with coffee and donuts served beginning at 9:30 AM. We will try to book the Hintz Alumni Center for our meeting.

2.         Election of Officers

Mark distributed a copy of the SPSEE Constitution, which describes the election process. The Board of Directors is to come up with a slate of candidates to be voted on at a General Membership Meeting.

The current officers are: President – Mark Wharton; Vice-President – Kevin Kelly, and Secretary/Treasurer – David Salvia. All were elected to three-year terms in October 2000, or appointed to fill the remainder of a term for officers who had to resign. Therefore, a new slate of officers is needed.

The constitution states that officers may not be elected to the same office for more than two consecutive terms, so since Mark Wharton has served two terms as president, he cannot be re-elected. The Vice-President and the Secretary/Treasurer are not so limited, and may run again if they choose.

Kevin Kelly volunteered to head a nominating committee that will come up with a slate of candidates. The committee is to complete its work by October 1 and present the slate of candidates for nomination at the October 18 meeting.

3.         Guest Speaker

A list of past guest speakers and suggested future speakers is attached to these minutes. The Board decided to ask the SPIRIT team to do a presentation at the October meeting. Mark Wharton will contact Tim Wheeler to see if this can be arranged. The alternate speaker is Dr. Donald Horner. Ray Lunnen will contact Donnie in the event that the SPIRIT team is unable to do a presentation.
