MINUTES
Members Present: Harry Bell, Larry Burton, Ray Lunnen, Tom Walsh, Mark Wharton
1. Meeting Purpose
The purpose of the meeting was to plan the agenda for the upcoming General Membership Meeting on Friday, October 10.
2. SPSEE Graduate Fellowship Fund
Mark Wharton will report the latest principal and interest balances for the fund, as of the date of the fall meeting. He will also report on the first fellowship award to Ph.D. candidate Cathy Muhonnen.
3. Recruiting High School Students
Dean Bradford passed out an article from USA Today at the last General Membership Meeting. The article detailed efforts from some of the top Universities to attract and recruit high school students. Dean later met with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, Rob Pangborn, to discuss this issue. Larry will invite Rob to our next meeting to talk to the attendees.
4. Other Speakers at October Meeting
Another suggested topic is a talk about ARL activities. Larry will invite Dave Hall from ARL to give a 15 minute talk at the fall meeting.
Tom Walsh has put a lot of work into reorganizing the SPSEE Home Page and making it easier to locate. The new home is at
If you have Internet access, please take a few minutes to check it out.
Tom will add pictures of the new officers after the next election, along with a group photo to be taken at the next meeting.
The fall meeting will mark the end of the current two year terms for the president, vice president and secretary of the Society, as well as for a number of the members of the board of directors. The nominating committee will nominate a slate of candidates and conduct elections at the fall meeting.
Does anyone have any suggestions for an SPSEE logo, or know anyone who is good at graphic design?
Ray Lunnen conducted a database search with the help of the Alumni Society and has a list of Penn State graduates who are employed at two major companies. Ray will try to line up speakers for future meetings by contacting alumni on these lists.
Tom Walsh is still interested in pursuing a web-based resume service for EE graduates. He gave us information from LionLink, a service of the Alumni Society.
Fall Meeting Date
The date chosen for the fall General Membership meeting is Friday, October 10, 1997. Harry will send out invitations and an agenda to the membership.
