Twenty-First Planning Committee Meeting
Tuesday, November 18, 1997
MINUTES
Members Present: Harry Bell, Dean Bradford, Larry Burton, Tom Collins, Kevin Kelly, Ray Lunnen, Tom Walsh, Mark Wharton
1. Meeting Purpose
The purpose of the meeting was to develop the ideas generated from the last General Membership meeting into projects with specific goals.
2. Appointment of SPSEE Secretary
Mark Wharton officially appointed Tom Walsh to a full term as SPSEE Secretary (Tom volunteered after the General Membership meeting). To commemorate the occasion, Mark presented Tom with an official PSU folder, notepad and pen.
3. Recruitment of High School Students - Dean Bradford
Dean Bradford discussed in more detail his ideas for helping to recruit highly
qualified high school students. Ideally we could contact and encourage students even younger
than high school to continue to work hard at their classes and to consider engineering
as a possible career. At this stage, however, it was deemed best to concentrate our
efforts on high school students who are considering attending Penn State.
To get the list of high school students, Mark Wharton volunteered to contact Rob Pangborn and
have him send Francine the names of
those who have applied to Penn State and indicated 'College of Engineering' as one
of their interests.
To get the list of potential callers, Dean Bradford volunteered to write two letters:
(1) to those who attended the last General Membership meeting, and (2) those SPSEE
members who did not attend. These letters will be sent out asking them to reply
to Francine Kauffman if they are interested in being trained and are willing to make phone calls.
The first step is to have those interested in making
phone calls be trained by Rob Pangborn's one day seminar in January. (For those who
can not attend, a packet of the information can be sent to them.)
Next, a list of students (from Rob Pangborn, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies)
along with a list of SPSEE callers will be given to Tom Collins (
twc3@psu.edu
) to put into a database.
Tom volunteered to develop and sort the database by zip code to match up the closest
callers and students.
Finally, this matched list will be sent to Francine Kauffman who will
send each caller their list of students to phone. Each caller will
make their phone calls at their own convenience.
4. SPSEE Home Page
Tom Walsh will put a link to a small biography of this year's SPSEE Fellowship award winner:
Kathy Muhonen. Updates for the others receiving awards will also be posted to the web page.
Tom will find out how to list the SPSEE page on the various search engines
used in keyword searches on the net (for more visibility).
Tom will continue to work with the EE Student Advisory Committee on creating
a type of web-based medium for Penn State EE Alumni
and EE students to communicate through. Proposals are being discussed for a private
SPSEE newsgroup (similar to www.rfglobalnet.com as suggested by Mark Wharton),
where any SPSEE active member may post questions/responses and any
EE student may post questions/responses. The 'private' part would only involve one layer
of security, such as to enter a password. This would
prevent just 'anyone with a web connection' from posting, and would also
preserve the integrity and privacy of our EE alumni's email addresses.
5. Logo
To increase the visibility of SPSEE among the present undergraduate and graduate EE students, it was suggested to have a $50.00 award for the best design of a logo for SPSEE. Larry Burton volunteered to contact Dave Salvia and have him send out an email announcement to this effect. Some words could include our website address, and encourage each student who submits a design to sign up for FREE to be an active 'student' SPSEE member. Finally, the actual design used does NOT have to be EXACTLY like the winning student's design, but should be very similar. In this way, many ideas can be generated, and at the same time increasing SPSEE's visibility among the EE students.
6. Future Topics
Harry Bell volunteered to contact Cindy Jones about a possible magazine article about SPSEE. This could help increase SPSEE's visibility among the EE Alumni who are not currently active members. It would also discuss our involvement in undergraduate recruiting.
