INTRODUCTION

College of Engineering students may participate in programs that result in earning degrees in more than one major (exceptions are noted below). The majors may be in the same college or in different colleges. Diplomas will be awarded for each major.

A concurrent majors program is one in which the requirements for at least two majors are completed concurrently or simultaneously, before graduation. Therefore, the diplomas for each of the majors are awarded at the same graduation time. A sequential majors program is one in which a student graduates and then re-enrolls for at least one more baccalaureate major.

Students must meet all degree and entrance requirements for each of the majors. If one of the concurrent majors being sought is under enrollment control, the student must be enrolled in the college of the major under enrollment control and participate in the regular entrance-to-major process during the pool semester. If more than one of the majors is in the College of Engineering and one is under enrollment control, the student must request the major that is under enrollment control during the entrance-to-major process. A major under enrollment control may not be added as an additional major. Forms for requesting a concurrent degrees program are available and must be completed and submitted in a timely manner. Requests for a concurrent major or majors can be made, at the earliest, during the entrance-to-major pool semester, after notification of admission to a major. Students should begin the process by consulting with their adviser.

Students who wish to re-enroll for a sequential major must meet all entrance and re-enrollment requirements and approvals for the sequential major. A major that is under enrollment control is not available as a sequential major.

COMBINATIONS OF MAJORS THAT ARE NOT AVAILABLE

The following combinations are not available as part of a concurrent majors program:

  • More than one major under enrollment control
  • Computer Science (CMPSC) and Computer Engineering (CMPEN)
  • Electrical Engineering (E E) and General Science (SCBS)

ESTABLISHED CONCURRENT DEGREE PROGRAMS

The College of Engineering has pre-approved, established concurrent degree programs with majors in the College of the Liberal Arts, as described below. Within the College of Engineering, the concurrent majors program of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, as well as Civil and Surveying Engineering have been approved. Students must still register for these programs by completing the appropriate concurrent majors form. Other combinations of majors are available but students will need to work with their adviser to determine which of the major requirements may be commonly used for the majors.

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING MAJORS & INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

The Colleges of the Liberal Arts and Engineering offer a concurrent degree program that results in a B.S. in International Studies (INLST) and a B.S. in a College of Engineering major. Go to Concurrent Majors Program in International Studies for a description of the program and its requirements.

Students must go through the regular entrance-to-major process process and be admitted to a College of Engineering major before they can register for the concurrent majors program with INLST. Students who are planning or are registered in this program are advised to pay particular attention to the Arts, Humanities, and Social and Behavioral Sciences courses they select. Careful selection of courses in these areas may enable students to use such courses to meet both general education and INLST requirements at the same time. Students should consult with their advisers in both majors when selecting courses.

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING MAJORS & LETTERS, ARTS AND SCIENCES

The Colleges of the Liberal Arts and Engineering offer a 10-semester concurrent degree program that results in a B.A. in Letters, Arts and Sciences (LAS) and a B.S. in a College of Engineering major (A E is not included). Go to Concurrent Majors Program in Letters, Arts & Sciences (PDF format) for a description of the the program.

Students may begin the program in either of the participating colleges but must be qualified for and file an application for admission to the College of Engineering major by the published deadline during the entrance-to-major pool semester.

The regular entrance-to-major process will still be followed for all students in the Engineering/LAS program. Students must confirm their College of Engineering major by the deadline during the spring semester of their second year, even if they are initially in the College of the Liberal Arts, and must meet all entrance-to-major requirements by the end of their pool semester. If the desired College of Engineering major is under enrollment control, the student must be in the College of Engineering by the deadline for requesting the major. After receiving notification of admission to a College of Engineering major, the student should file the request for Concurrent Majors Program with LAS.

The requirements for the Liberal Arts degree are those for the LAS major and the requirements of the College of Engineering degree depend on the major. The College of the Liberal Arts provides advising located in 138 Sparks Building, University Park, 814-865-2545 for the students in this program. After students are formally admitted to a major in the College of Engineering they will be assigned a faculty adviser in their major. Prior to that, students consult with an adviser in the Engineering Advising Center.

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING MAJORS WITH FRENCH, GERMAN OR SPANISH

Students wishing to combine the study of French, German or Spanish and an engineering major may participate in a formal concurrent degree program that will result in a B.S. in French, German or Spanish, and a B.S. in a College of Engineering major. College of Engineering students are eligible to enroll in the B.S. degree in French with the Engineering Option, in the B.S. degree in German with the Engineering Option, or the B.S. degree in Spanish with the Engineering Option. Go to Concurrent Majors Program with French, Concurrent Majors Program with German, or Concurrent Majors Program with Spanish for a list of the courses required to meet the degree requirements for each of the language majors in the Concurrent Majors Program.

The French/Engineering, German/Engineering or Spanish/Engineering degrees are baccalaureate programs offered by the French and Francophone Studies, German, or Spanish Department for students who wish to combine study in French, German, or Spanish language and culture with an engineering major. In addition to taking courses offered by the language department, students use engineering courses to complete the requirements for the B.S. in French, German or Spanish major with the engineering option.

Students in these concurrent degree programs need to pay particular attention to the Arts, Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences courses they select. Careful selection of courses in these areas will enable students to use such courses to meet both general education and French, German, or Spanish degree requirements at the same time. Students should consult with their advisers in both the language and engineering departments when selecting these courses.

SURVEYING ENGINEERING & CIVIL ENGINEERING

This program requires ten semesters of study with the first six semesters at the Wilkes-Barre campus and the final four semesters at University Park. Upon completion of the program, a B.S. in Survey Engineering (SUR E) and a B.S. in Civil Engineering (C E) are awarded by the College of Engineering. To be eligible for this program, a student must initially enroll in the Surveying Engineering program at the Wilkes-Barre campus. Go to Concurrent Majors in Surveying Engineering & Civil Engineering for more program information.

Students who wish to pursue the concurrent major do not go through the College of Engineering entrance-to-major process, since they are already in the SUR E major. Instead, students must submit an Application for Approval of Concurrent Majors during their pool semester.

Interested SUR E students must request the C E major before the deadline for the regular entrance-to-major process during the spring semester the second year. They will be considered for the program if they have completed or are in the process of completing the four entrance-to-major courses (MATH 140, MATH 141, CHEM 012, and PHYS 211) with a grade of "C" or better.

To qualify for the SUR E/C E program, students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.70. In the event that C E is under enrollment control and the minimum cumulative GPA for admission to the major is higher than 2.70, the higher GPA will be used to determine admission to the program.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING & NUCLEAR ENGINEERING

A concurrent majors program combining Mechanical Engineering (M E) and Nuclear Engineering (NUC E) is available. Twenty-three (23) additional credits beyond the Mechanical Engineering degree requirements are needed to complete both majors. This concurrent majors program is expected to have enhanced employment opportunities in the nuclear power industry. Students who plan to enter this concurrent majors program must select M E as their first choice during the regular entrace-to-major process. If admitted to M E, NUC E may be added as a second major. Go to Concurrent Majors in Mechanical Engineering & Nuclear Engineering for a description of the program.
