Core Undergraduate Curriculum

The following table of "Required Core Classes by Major" consists of math, science, and engineering courses required by more than one major. The information is intended for the use of faculty, administrators, and students in determining and identifying courses that are required by more than one major. It may be particularly helpful to students who are undecided or uncertain of their intended major and who would therefore like to schedule courses that provide maximum flexibility. It is also intended for the use of faculty when considering any curriculum changes.

Most of these courses would normally be taken during the first two years of a baccalaureate program and most are available at all campuses. Other math, science, and engineering courses may also be required during the first two years but are specific to one major, and therefore, are not listed in this table.

In addition to taking core courses listed in this table, students are expected to take courses that meet General Education requirements during their first two years. Such courses have GWS, FYS, GHA, GA, GH, and GS designations and are required for all majors.

Questions about course substitutions or the use of GENERAL transfer credits for any General Education requirement or for the entrance-to-major courses—MATH 140, MATH 141, PHYS 211, and CHEM 110 (or CMPSC 122 for CMPSC)—should be directed to the Engineering Advising Center (advisor@engr.psu.edu, 814-863-1033). Approval for any such substitutions requires the signature of the Assistant Dean for Student Services and may be requested by submitting a petition. Go to Forms to obtain the appropriate form in PDF format.

Questions about course substitutions or the use of GENERAL transfer credits for any other degree requirements should be directed to the undergraduate coordinator of the student's major or intended major.
