Petition Writing Guidelines

When is a petition needed?

Petitions are needed whenever students are trying to gain Department or College approval for exceptions to program requirements. They are also needed to instruct the Student Records Secretary when changes are needed to your student record.

What petition do I use?

How do I write a petition?

You should treat your petition as a formal proposal. Provide all required information. Write in complete sentences, and be as articulate as possible. Write clearly or use a typewriter.

Request

  • State clearly the program requirement for which the exception is being sought.
  • Clearly state the exception.
  • Example: I am petitioning that AE 497 taken at Leeds be accepted as a GA and a 9-6-3 pattern be approved.

Justification

  • State clearly the reasons that the petition should be acceptable.
  • Example: AE 497 is a prescribed course for the study abroad program and pre-approved as a GA.

Any further questions should be directed to the Undergraduate Program Officer.
