Generation IV Nuclear Energy Systems Construction Cost Reduction through the Use of Virtual Environments
Partners: Penn State Applied Research Lab, Dept. of MNE, Dept. of AE, Westinghouse Corporation, and Burns & Roe
Sponsor: US Department of Energy
Overview:
A virtual mockup of the auxiliary building of the Westinghouse AP1000 Nuclear Power Plant was developed to evaluate the benefits of using full-scale, 3-D mock-ups. The virtual mock-up was placed within the SEA Lab CAVE™, a five sided immersive projection display system. The project was performed in three phases. The first assessed the value of full scale mock-ups for design review. The second focused on the use of virtual mock-ups for construction plan development and review. The final phase focused on performing operational planning in a virtual environment.
