Description

The goal for this course is to develop in each student a set of skills for analyzing and designing effective organization strategies, structures and processes for projects and companies within the construction industry.

Prerequisite(s)

There are no prerequisites for this course but a working knowledge of the construction industry will be needed to participate in the class discussions and to perform the course projects.

Course Objectives

Students should have the following skills or knowledge after completing this course:

  • Develop a strategic plan for a company in the construction industry;
  • Perform an internal evaluation of a company and assess their competitive advantages and core competencies;
  • Identify and evaluate new market opportunities for construction companies and potential market threats;
  • Identify critical information and knowledge needs within a construction firm and develop criteria for creating a knowledge management system for the company;
  • Understand organizational theory and it's application to the construction industry; and
  • Understand the design of construction project organizations and the managerial challenges related to these dynamic, short term organizations.
