B.A.E./M.A.E. Program*
General Description
The Integrated B.A.E./M.A.E. program involves a minimum of 172 credits of study. This amounts to only 12 additional credits beyond the B.A.E. – and includes advanced graduate courses within the student’s option area. The program consists of a formalized cluster of courses (30 credits) designed to provide students with a Masters-level education in their option area. These courses have been approved by the Department of Architectural Engineering faculty for each option area and are credited toward the Master of Architectural Engineering Degree (M.A.E.) on the student’s graduate transcript. They are designed to integrate the requirements of the B.A.E. with additional graduate credits to provide a graduate-level education. Small modifications to these approved programs may be made based on course availability and scheduling situations, with approval of the academic advisor and the Graduate Program Officer.
Of the 30 credits required for the M.A.E. degree, 18 must be completed at the
500-level or above (beginning in Fall 2007). Prospective M.A.E. students should
realize that these high-level courses, coupled with the intensive undergraduate
senior project and other undergraduate courses present a very demanding curriculum
and work load. In graduate courses, undergraduate students will be competing
with M.S., M.Eng. and Ph.D. students. These courses demand a higher level of
understanding, initiative, and problem solving skills. For this reason, students
in the integrated B.A.E./M.A.E. program are limited to a maximum of 16 credits
per semester, and admission to this program will only be granted to students
who have displayed the potential to succeed with such a demanding schedule.
In general, the integrated program can be completed with one additional semester
over that required for the undergraduate degree alone. For outstanding students,
using advanced placement and/or summer classes, both degrees may be earned within
the normal 5-year undergraduate time frame.
Admission Requirements
A limited number of undergraduate students in the B.A.E. program will be considered for admission to the integrated undergraduate/graduate program leading to the B.A.E. and the M.A.E. degrees. Students who are currently enrolled in the seventh semester of the B.A.E. degree program may be admitted to the integrated B.A.E./M.A.E. program, following a positive review of an application specific to this program, by the faculty committee on graduate admissions. The faculty will consider the student's potential for success at the graduate level based on the student’s prior performance and level of commitment.
Students must have maintained a GPA for classes taken in the third and fourth
years of at least 3.00 and must have attained a grade of C or better in all
classes listed as A E. Students admitted to the integrated program must maintain
a GPA of at least 3.00 in classes used toward the M.A.E. degree.
Degree Requirements:
For the integrated B.A.E./M.A.E. degree program, 30 credits of course work are required. However, with some courses counting toward both degrees, this amounts to only 12 credits beyond the B.A.E. requirement. To receive the M.A.E. degree, a student must complete the 30 credits of courses that comprise the graduate program with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
*This program is only open to undergraduates currently enrolled in Penn State's AE program.
