Career Summary
Chimay Anumba graduated at 18 with a First Class Honours (Summa Cum Laude) degree in Building from the University of Jos, Nigeria. He worked briefly as a construction site engineer and as a design engineer before undertaking postgraduate research in Civil Engineering (Computer-Aided Engineering) at the University of Leeds, UK.
On completion of his PhD in 1989, he joined Curtins Consulting Engineers plc, and was involved in a wide range of civil and structural engineering projects as an Engineer/Senior Engineer. This was followed by a period as a Senior Lecturer and Reader in Computer-Aided Engineering at the University of Teesside, UK. In 1998 he joined Loughborough University, UK, as Reader in Computer-Integrated Construction and subsequently became Founding Director of the university-wide Centre for Innovative and Collaborative Engineering (1999) and Professor of Construction Engineering & Informatics (2000). He is a past Chair of the European Group for Intelligent Computing in Engineering and was recently on the governing Council of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
Professor Anumba’s research work has received support with a total value of over £15m ($30m) and he has successfully supervised over 31 doctoral candidates and 15 postdoctoral researchers. He has more than 400 publications in his field, undertakes advisory/consultancy work for the UK Government and several firms, and is Co-Editor of the Journal of Information Technology in Construction (ITCon).
He has won several awards for his work, including an Engineering Foresight Award from the Royal Academy of Engineering. Visiting Professor/Scholar appointments include Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA; Stanford University, USA; Hanyang University, Korea; Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM); Chongqing University, China; UTHM (Malaysia); University of Florida, USA; and Covenant University (Nigeria). In recognition of his substantial and sustained original contributions to the field of Construction Engineering and Informatics, Professor Anumba was awarded the higher doctorate degree of Doctor of Science, DSc, by Loughborough University in July 2006. In January 2007, he was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands for outstanding scientific contributions to Building and Construction Engineering.
