Advising Notes - Vol. 1 No. 3

This instrument is intended for communications with all AE students and perspective AE students. Anyone wishing to be added to the listserv should notify Prof. Moses Ling at mosesling@psu.edu.
All AE and ENGAE students must stay on the listserv.

All AE and ENGAE Students

  • Several changes to the AE curriculum were approved by the University Faculty Senate recently. These changes officially apply to the next incoming freshmen class (2007 Pool). The AE Department will entertain petitions from AE students electing to adopt any of the changes.
  • Let me at this point say that petitions become a formal part of your academic record and should be treated seriously. Please refer to the advising web page for the writing of petitions.
  • ACCTG 211 (4) is no longer a requirement for incoming freshmen student when they choose the CM option. Current students may choose to petition to conform to the new requirements.
  • Remember ACCTG 211 is a 4-credit course. These credits must be replaced by 4 credits of Department Electives.
  • AE 221 will become a 3 credit course starting Fall Semester 2005.
  • AE 309 will become a 3 credit course starting Fall Semester 2005.
  • As the result of the ACCTG 211, AE 221 and AE 309 changes, the total number of Department Elective credits will become divisible by three. As such the “dangling credits” will be phased out of the program. For everyone currently an AE or ENGAE, you will have one or two dangling credits. You must take a reasonable course to fulfill these credits. See your advisor for approval.
  • AE 472 and AE 473 will be required courses in the construction option. Previously they were department electives.
  • To view the new 5-year plan, see the Department web site Advising page.

First Year ENGR Students interested in AE

Welcome to AE Advising Notes. I have included students in AE 124 on the listserv, hoping that the information in this e-newsletter is useful to you. Please continue to go to the Engineering Advising Center for advice. Dr. Memari is the AE faculty on staff at the Center. He is typically there Monday afternoons 1:30 to 4:30. You can make an appointment at the Advising Center.

FAQ’s: (these are date sensitive)

Q: EG130 is closed for Spring 2005. What should I do?
A: There is a higher than normal number of students needing EG130 this year. If you have not been able to sign up on eLion, you should check with the Engineering Graphics Department in person, (213 Hammond) and put your name on the waiting list.

Q: If I took ED&G100, how do I get credits for ED&G130?
A: Anytime, you deviate from the standard 5-year plan published in the Undergraduate Program Guide (the book you received at FTCAP), you will need to file a petition. You file a petition after you have a grade for the course and after you are an AE or ENGAE student. Unless you are admitted to AE, the AE Department cannot process a petition for you. See Sharron Williams at 225 Eng Unit A. and visit the petition page online.

Q: When do I apply for admission to AE?
A: Keep an eye out for an announcement in the E-News that you get via the email from the Advising Center. In the spring, March or April, there will be an announcement to indicate your major “preference”. This IS your formal application. You must indicate that your preference is AE if you want AE, whether you have all four courses done or have a good GPA or not. We would not be able to select you, if we don’t see your name on the “preference” list.

Second Year ENGAE and ENGR Students

  • Please notify Professor Ling mosesling@psu.edu if you still need EMch 13 or Phys 213 (if you have not done so). He is going to see if there is anyway to work out a solution.

Fifth Years

  • Please respond to the email requesting your opinion on the AE Educational Program Objectives. It is important that we get all of you to respond. This is a serious step in the ABET accreditation and your participation is important.
