Advising Notes - Vol. 2 No. 4

This instrument is intended for communications with all AE students and perspective AE students. Anyone wishing to be added to the listserv should notify Prof. Moses Ling at mosesling@psu.edu.
All AE and ENGAE students must stay on the listserv.

All AE, ENGAE and interested ENGR Students

  • A general meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 11th at 7:00 pm in 100 Thomas Building to discuss the revised curriculum. You should attend unless you are graduating spring or summer 2006. The new curriculum cannot be chosen by these graduates.
  • The proposed revised curriculum will be posted early in January 2006 on the AE advising web page www.engr.psu.edu/ae/. I am sure you will find it helpful. This page is updated as necessary.
  • Reminder to use the Department Elective Work Sheet for upper level students. www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/electives_worksheet.doc This form must be completed and accompany any petitions for department electives. You will need to indicate the number of department credits you are required to take and fill in the courses taken or proposed. This form is reproduced on the back of the blue petition form available from Mrs. Kimberly Lyle, 104 Engineering A. An updated version will be produced after the curriculum revision is approved by the University Faculty Senate (next summer).

First Year ENGR Students interested in AE

  • Please keep an eye out in the E-news during the semester about when to file your preference for AE as your major. Pick AE as your first preference. Don’t miss it. Even if you have not completed all the requirements, if you really want AE, choose AE as your first choice anyway. If you don’t choose AE as first preference, your name will not come up on our list.
  • Keep Saturday February 25 morning open for the Engineering Open House. Come visit the AE Department. This is a good time to ask the current AE students and faculty questions about the major. The event is designed for you and any high school students interested in AE. http://www.engr.psu.edu/openhouse/
  • Please try to follow the curriculum in your Program Guide (The book you receive at FTCAP) as closely as possible. Deviating from the standard curriculum may cause you scheduling headaches later.
  • As you are scheduling your Gen Ed courses, make sure you are paying attention to the 6 credits of IL and US requirements. See advising web page for more information http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/ae_gen_eds.asp
  • If you are still in need of EG130, section three has openings. You must contact the EG Department for registration. 814-865-2952

Second Year ENGAE and ENGR Students

  • If you are an ENGAE student you must be in AE202. Don’t worry about Physics 213 as a pre-requisite. ENGR second year students who are very sure about wanting to be an AE and have a 3.0 GPA right now may also sign up for AE202. Permission from the instructor in necessary.  See Sharron Williams at 225 Engineering A to sign up.
  • In order to take AE308 in the third year, you must have EMCH13 this semester. If you are still having trouble getting into a section at this point, please notify mosesling@psu.edu with name, ID, and section you wish to add. We are hoping (not promising) to add a few more students in what appears to be full sections. Please notify Prof. Ling prior to Friday, January 6th.

Third Years

  1. In your third year you should have all the AE300 level courses. If you have to miss an AE300 level course, make sure it is not one in the option you may be interested in pursuing. For instance, if you think you want structural, make sure you have taken AE308 in the third year. If you missed it last fall, email mosesling@psu.edu immediately.  You may still have an option to take an equivalent course this spring.
  2. If you are interested in going to Leeds in the Fall semester 2006, your preliminary application is due Friday, January 13, 2006. Your parent’s signature is required. Turn the completed form into Professor Ling or Ms. Sharron Williams. Make sure you sign up for the right courses this semester. Check the Leeds version of the BAE curriculum on http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/curriculum/bae.asp The application is available on-line at http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/study_abroad/leeds_current.asp
  3. At the end of this semester you will be declaring your major. Do some leg work to learn more about the options. See your advisor and/or faculty in the option area. There is a special opportunities designed to help you make this important decision: The SSAE Option Social. Take advantage of this event.
  4. Electrical Engineering has added a third section of EE220. If you were not previously able to schedule this course space is available in section 3.

Fourth Years

  1. Please try to take all remaining architecture studio requirements in the fourth year. It is difficult to have studio while trying to do thesis. This includes Arch443.
  2. Students returning from Leeds, you will need to file a petition for some of the courses. Please be on the look out for a notice for a debriefing meeting. You can get the paper work done then. Your grades will be coming from England and, typically, they take a while. Be patient. Right now I have entered a DF for each course.

Fifth Years

  1. If you are graduating this semester, please go on e-Lion and activate your intent to graduate.
  2. Check your degree audit now. Make sure you have the right number credits to graduate. Red marks and /or minus signs on the degree audit indicate unmet requirements. See your advisor for guidance. Now is the time to check while you can still do something about it.
  3. Check the Academic Calendar for important dates http://www.pct.edu/registrar/scheduling/spring/calendar.htm
  4. If you are getting Minor and still need to file the paperwork, go to the department offering the minor and fill out the necessary paper work. Your AE faculty and staff cannot help you.
    1. Don’t wait till the last minute! Do it the first week after you get back when work has not yet piled up.
      1. International Studies Minor – International Programs, 410  Boucke
      2. Architecture Studies Minor – Architecture Department, Stuckeman Family Building
  5. For planning of your big day, only students who plan to fulfill the B.A.E. degree requirements this spring are eligible to attend the spring commencement. If you have additional credits to complete in another semester, you will attend the commencement that semester. IP students will attend both the undergraduate and the graduate commencements in the same semester. Student who is planning to graduate this semester, but at the end (after late drop) fails to complete one or more courses successfully will be permitted to attend commencement. These students will not be receiving a diploma at the end of the ceremony.

Happy New Year!
