Advising Notes - Vol. 2 No. 5
This instrument is intended for communications with all AE students and perspective AE students. Anyone wishing to be added to the listserv should notify Prof. Moses Ling at mosesling@psu.edu.
All AE and ENGAE students must stay on the listserv.
Fall semester registration notes:
- Check your schedule early and report any problems as soon as possible to mosesling@psu.edu. If the problems are uncovered early, we have a better chance of finding a solution.
- The suggested patterns for fall 2006 can be found on the AE advising web site. http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/Semester_Schedule
- The proposed revision to the AE curriculum has been submitted to the University. Approval is not automatic, although we are optimistic about its adoption. Please schedule your courses keeping in mind that delays and problems in the approval process is possible.
- Please see the following information pertaining to your semester standing. Many changes have been incorporated for this fall.
Second Years ENGAE – Fall 05
- Most of you are ENGR or DUS students currently. Until you are officially an ENGAE student, the AE or Arch courses are not available to you. Every prospective ENGAE student is in the same situation. The spaces that you see being taken in those courses are taken by Second Years who gained their ENGAE status recently.
- Remember to indicate your desire to become an AE when the electronic “Major Preference” survey becomes available in the next few weeks. Watch the College’s E-news for the announcements. This is the ONLY application step you need to take. Don’t miss it.
- To be eligible for ENGAE status, you must complete Math140, Math141, Chem12 and Phys211 with at least a “C” and carry a GPA of 3.0 or higher at the end of SPRING semester 2006 (not summer). If you are not sure you are going to meet these criteria, you may still be able to enter the major at the end of the second year. Please schedule your second year with non-AE and non-Arch courses shown on the 2nd and 3rd year of the AE curriculum. Students in this category can than catch up with all the AE and Arch courses in the 3rd year.
If you will be a second years ENGAE student in fall 06
- Remember that the Architecture and AE courses are closed to students until they are officially an ENGAE. All of the current ENGR and DUS students are unable to schedule these courses until their status is changed in June. Students intending to enter AE should schedule all other courses during their assigned registration period and wait till June to add the AE and Arch courses.
- Please schedule according to the suggested schedules posted for your half of the alphabet (by last names).
- AE202 is offered in the FALL only starting this fall. This is a new time and not as printed on the Engineering Program Guide you received during FTCAP.
- AE 221 and AE 222 are co-requisites. Take them in the same semester. You will be disenrolled if you only sign up for one of the two courses.
- Arch130A – Conflicts with other classes must be avoided. You are expected to be in class during the assigned hours.
- Special sections of Emch11 have been set aside for you. Sometime in the summer, the remaining seats will be made available to other students. Please schedule as indicated on the sample schedules as soon as you are able to register. Don’t wait to hear about your ENGAE status.
- CMPSC201 is not shown on the suggested schedules because the course will no longer be required in the proposal new curriculum. If the outcome of the approval process is contrary to our expectations, revisions will be posted.
- If any second year students have problems getting into the assigned sections of EMCH11, please email mosesling@psu.edu and provide name, student ID number and the section that you are trying to schedule. Clearly identify your request in the subject line of the email. (See advising website for writing emails to advisors.) http://www.psu.edu/advising/email.htm
If you will be a third year AE student in fall 06
- Take AE308, 309, 310, 311 and 372 in your third year. You will be selecting an option in the spring of your third year. These courses are designed to give you an understanding of each option.
- AE308, AE309 and AE372 are only offered once a year. Make sure you schedule them in the right semester. (AE308 in the fall. AE309 and AE372 in the spring. AE309 is at a new time.) o Prerequisites: Please make sure you have the right prerequisites.
- EMch13 for AE308
- ME23 for AE310
- If you are new to AE as a third year, take a look at the “Fifth Semester – New Arrival” schedule. If possible schedule the AE and ARCH courses as shown. This schedule assumes you have completed all other non-major courses listed in the second and third year. You must also look out for the pre-requisite courses.
If you will be a fourth year AE student in fall 06
- You are encouraged to take Arch443, Chicago Trip, in the fall otherwise the spring trip will be over subscribed.
- ARCH441 and 442 will continue to be 4 credits each, for this academic year, 2006-2007.
- Arch 441 studios are scheduled for either MWF or TR afternoon. We are expecting all students to be in class during the assigned hours. Therefore, special efforts have been made to minimize conflicts with other courses.
- 1. Structural student should schedule Arch441 TR afternoons. Structural students taking AE401 concurrently with Arch441 will have a conflict the first hour. Sign up for Arch 441 and ask Sharron to override the conflict and sign you up for AE401.
- L/E students should enroll in the MWF section. (AE464 is scheduled for Tuesday afternoons)
- Mechanical and Construction option students may sign up for the MWF section. If that is filled, you may sign up for the TR section by following the same procedures outlined for structural students.
- Rome students may substitute Rome studio for either AE441 or 442.
- If you are going to Leeds, The International Studies office will schedule your courses. They will schedule you for Arch 441, Arch 211, AE402, AE430 and AE497 (GA). Lighting student will be taking AE461 by the web and is exempt from AE430. Students having taken Arch211 already and L/E students wanting to not register for AE430 should notify Prof. Ling.
- AE404 will not be available to current third year students. Please plan on taking AE401 and AE402.
- CM students, please be aware that STAT401 is a pre-requisite for CE336, a spring 2007 course. This requirement is strictly enforced.
If you are a Fifth Year Student in fall 06
- All soon-to-be fifth years should review their degree audits to make sure all graduation requirements can be met in the next 2 semesters. This is your responsibility. If you need a petition, you should file it as early as possible. Getting them out of the way before you leave for the summer is a good idea. Remember, the Dean will not review petitions (that needs her approval) during the semester that you plan to graduate.
- Please be aware that the proposed curriculum changes are not yet approval, although we are optimistic that the proposal with be accepted. You should schedule with the possibility of both outcome in mind.
- L/E students will not be required to take EE365 or the engineering science elective. Please schedule department electives.
If you need to consult with a faculty member, please make an appointment with your advisor. http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/.
