program. Students already in the program are assigned the curriculum applicable
to their program year. See the listing below and check your degree audit to
confirm your program year. See the advising web page for the particular
curriculum corresponding to your program year. (2006 and earlier, 2007, new-
2008)

Students may elect to change their program year. Student should evaluate their

beginning of the fall semester regarding the procedure to request program year
change.

Students adopting the revised curriculum may graduate with a credit-count
between 160 and 168 during the transitional years. Visit the FAQ page
http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/prop_faq.asp for answers to common
questions.

Summary of changes in the revised curriculum:
1. The number of credits in the revised AE curriculum is 160.
2. CMPSC201 is not a required course in the revised curriculum.
3. ARCH441 and ARCH442 will be 3 credit courses in the new curriculum.
For the next few years, these courses will continue to be offered as 4
credits.
4. Structural students will take AE401 and AE402. Non-structural students
will take AE404 in place of AE401 and AE402. AE404 will not be available
to 4th year students in 2006-2007 academic year.
5. AE439 and AE475 are no longer mandatory for structural students. In
place of these two courses, a 3-credit department elective is required.

Second Year ENGAE student – Fall 2006

The notification to students admitted to ENGAE status was emailed on 2 June
2006. As soon as the records are changed by the registrar’s office, ENGAE
students will be able to schedule the controlled courses.

A student’s academic plan is the responsibility of the students. Information is
provided to help students understand the program. Studying the information
posted on the AE website is encouraged. Keep in mind that the AE curriculum is
rather rigid. Consulting with your advisor prior to deviating from the established
curriculum is highly recommended.

Students should consult with their assigned advisor regularly. All new ENGAE
students will be assigned an advisor prior the start of the Fall semester. When it
is updated later in the summer, consult the online faculty advisor list for your
assigned advisor. http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/index.asp

For Fall 2006, schedule courses shown on the suggested schedule.

o All second year ENGAE students should schedule AE202 in the fall. This
course will NO LONGER be offered in the spring semester.
o ENGAE students meeting the prerequisites should schedule EMCH11 in
the fall and EMCH13 in the spring semesters of the second year. (Both
EMCH11 and EMCH13 are prerequisites for AE308, a course in the 5th
semester.)
o EMCH11 section 5 and 8 has been reserved for ENGAE students.
Schedule these sections only if your suggested schedule calls for
EMCH11 at 11:15-12:05.
o ENGAE students should schedule 3 credits of ARCH130A in the fall and in
the spring of the second year. ARCH130A must be taken as a fall-spring
sequence.
o Students may schedule EG130 concurrently with ARCH130A if not taken
previously. ED&G100 is an acceptable substitution, but a petition is
required. See http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/petition.asp to learn
about petitions.
o Please note that CMPSC201 is no longer a requirement.

Congratulations and welcome to Architectural Engineering.

Third Year AE Students – New Arrivals – Fall 2006

If you are a student just joining the program in your 5th semester, welcome to the
program. Please read the following:

A student’s academic plan is the responsibility of the students. Information is
provided to help students understand the program. Studying the information
posted on the AE website is encouraged. Keep in mind that the AE curriculum is
rather rigid. Consulting with your advisor prior to deviating from the established
curriculum is highly recommended.

Students should consult with their assigned advisor regularly. All new AE
students will be assigned an advisor prior the start of the Fall semester When it is
updated later in the summer, consult the online faculty advisor list for your
assigned advisor. http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/index.asp

Scheduling:
o New AE students should try to catch up to the prescribed program by the
end of the third year. A suggested schedule is provided for “5th semester
new arrivals”. http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/schedule.asp
Students should make sure that prerequisites have been taken. It may be
wise to consider summer sessions if a student is not “on track”.
o Take AE308, 309, 310, 311 and 372 in your third year. You will be
selecting an option in the spring of your third year. These courses are
designed to give you an understanding of each option.
o AE308, AE309 and AE372 are only offered once a year. Make sure you
schedule them in the right semester. (AE308 in the fall. AE309 and AE372
in the spring. AE309 is at a new time.)
o Prerequisites: Please make sure you have the right prerequisites.
o EMch13 for AE308
o ME23 for AE310
o If you are new to AE as a third year, take a look at the “Fifth Semester –
New Arrival” schedule. If possible schedule the AE and ARCH courses as
shown. This schedule assumes you have completed all other non-major
courses listed in the second and third year. You must also look out for the
pre-requisite courses.
o ARCH130A must be taken as a fall-spring sequence. Do not postpone
taking ARCH130A till the fourth year.

Students in Other Semesters
Please refer to Advising Notes Vol.2 No. 5 published in the spring for pertinent
information. http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/faculty/ling/advising_notes.asp

Students planning to graduate in Fall 2006
o Please go on e-lion and activate your intent to graduate.
o Please be absolutely sure that you have fulfilled all program requirements.
Visit your advisor at the beginning of fall to make sure.
IP Students
o IP students should understand that the BAE degree audit is programed to
show all 400 and 500-level courses taken. Some 500-level courses not
used for the BAE program may be shown as department electives.

Students are responsible for taking the correct number of credits in the
BAE and the MAE program. Sharron will manually adjust the BAE and the
MAE degree audits.
o IP student should understand that the structure of the MAE program
consists of three parts:
o 12 credits of required BAE courses
o 6 credits from the MAE/BAE electives list. These courses also
count as BAE department electives.
o 12 credits of 500-level courses either prescribed or elected by the
student from the MAE/BAE electives list. These 12 credits go
towards the MAE program requirements and cannot be used to
satisfy BAE program requirements.
o If the coursework taken deviated from the MAE proposal on file,
please amend your proposal with the concurrence of your advisor.
