AE ADVISING NOTES – Vol. 3 No. 3 23 October 2006
This instrument is intended for communications with all AE students and prospective AE students. Anyone wishing to be added to or deleted from the listserv should notify Prof. Moses D. F. Ling mosesling@psu.edu
All AE and ENGAE students must remain on the listserv.

COURSE ABBREVIATIONS AND NUMBERS CHANGING

Course abbreviations and numbers at Penn State are changing, and this will affect some
students' Spring 2007 registration. This is all part of the University Faculty Senate's goal
of achieving curricular consistency among campuses and making it easier for students to
move among Penn State campuses. In many cases, campus-specific course
abbreviations have been eliminated in favor of a single designation in a discipline. For
example, the psychology course abbreviation PSY has become PSYCH and the
mathematics course abbreviation MTHBD is now MATH. Visit the following website for
an up-to-date mapping of old to new course abbreviations and course numbers:
http://www.senate.psu.edu/scca/uca/uca_legislation.htm

PROGRAM YEAR
If you have not adopted a new program year and wish to do so, you should see
Ms. Sharron Williams for a petition. Follow curriculum information on the web
pages for your program year.

SUGGESTED SEMESTER SCHEDULE

An effort is made each semester to schedule all required courses without time conflicts.
Course schedules are coordinated for the published pattern for each semester, plus the
“new arrival” third year pattern. Students should refer to
http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/schedule.asp for “suggested schedules”. Student
should follow the published schedule as much as possible to avoid conflicts. It is the
responsibility of the out-of-sequence students to schedule the required courses.

SEDE DI ROMA – SUMMER 2007
Due to the number of students interested and the lead time necessary to make
arrangements, the deadline for the initial commitment is moved to 1 December
2006. With the initial application, please submit a $200 check for the International
Program admissive fee. Make check payable to The Pennsylvania State
University. Please see Professor Ling for an application if you have not received
one. After this date, applications will be accepted subject to availability.

SECOND YEAR ENGAE STUDENTS
For Spring 2007, schedule courses shown on the suggested schedule
http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/schedule.asp

Schedule EMCH 13 in the spring. Both EMCH11 and EMCH13 are prerequisites
for AE308, a course in the 5th semester. If necessary, use the summer to
complete EMCH13. (CE340 will no longer be an acceptable substitute for AE308
beginning this year.)
ENGAE students should schedule 3 credits of ARCH130A in the fall and in the
spring of the second year. ARCH130A must be taken as a fall-spring sequence.
Please note that CMPSC201 is no longer a requirement.
AE221 and AE222 must be scheduled concurrently.
Do not schedule any course that conflicts with ARCH130A without consulting
with Prof. Ling.

THIRD YEAR STUDENTS – NEW ARRIVALS
Take AE309, 310, 311 and 372 in the spring semester (if not taken already). You
will be selecting an option in the spring of your third year. These courses are
designed to give you an understanding of each option.
The Architecture Department is planning on offering a special section of
ARCH130A MWF between 11:00 and 1:30. Let Ms. Sharron Williams (225 Eng
A) know if you need this section. Submit your name and PSU ID number.
ARCH130A must be taken as a fall-spring sequence. Do not postpone taking
ARCH130A till the fourth year.

THIRD YEAR STUDENTS
Third year students should complete AE308, AE309, AE310, AE311 and AE372
in the third year. AE308, AE310, AE311 and AE372 are C-required courses.
If you are thinking about going to the Leeds study abroad program Fall semester
of the fourth year,
o Do not take Arch211 in the spring. You will get this course in Leeds.
Please sign up for one of the courses below in its place.
o If you are thinking about the Lighting/Electrical option, sign up for AE444
in the 6th semester. You will need this for AE464 when you return. You will
take AE461 via the Internet while in Leeds.
o Stat401 is suggested for students in other options.
o If you are interested in study abroad in Leeds, see Prof. Ling for additional
information by Nov. 1.

FOURTH YEAR STUDENTS
If you expect to have a time conflict with ARCH442, you must inform Ms. Sharron
Williams. The architecture faculty are expecting student to not conflict with studio
time. If you need to schedule for the Tuesday and Thursday section in order to
avoid a conflict after the section is filled, contact Prof. Ling.
CE336 has been reduced to 3 credits. CE337 (CE397A) is the one credit lab.
You will need both. The two departments are working on a resolution regarding
time conflicts.

FIFTH YEAR STUDENTS
Check to see that you will have all the requirements lined up for graduation.
If you have any petitions, you must file them one semester prior to your
graduation. The Dean will NOT consider petitions filed in your last semester!
Don’t wait. Check your degree audit. If things are not as you expect them, you
probably need to file a petition. See your advisor for advice. Forms are available
from Ms. Sharron Williams.

MAE/BAE STUDENTS
If you are expecting to graduate this semester, you must activate you “intent to
graduate” status on e-Lion.
Your undergraduate degree audit will be missing some credits. See Sharron if
you need to check that they are indeed recorded (on the graduate records)
You must follow your program of study filed when you applied for the program.
Alterations to course selections and proposed schedule must be approved in
advance.

If you are getting a Minor, go to the department offering the minor and fill out the
necessary paper work. Don’t wait till the last minute.

Please keep track of your progress using information provided on the web page.
The MAE degree audit is not yet perfected.
