Advising Notes - Vol. 4 No. 3
AE ADVISING NOTES – Vol. 3 No. 5 14 January 2008
This instrument is intended for communications with all AE students and prospective
AE students. Anyone wishing to be added to or deleted from the listserv should
notify Prof. Moses D. F. Ling mosesling@psu.edu
All AE and ENGAE students must remain on the listserv.
PETITIONS – Important!
By the end of the day Monday, January 14, 2008, all previously submitted
petitions have been processed to the best of our knowledge. Please check your
degree audit to verify this. It is your responsibility to manage your academic
progress and records.
New petitions will be reviewed beginning Tuesday, 15 January 2008.
o A new yellow petition form will be used for department petitions. These
forms are available in the foyer of the 2nd floor of Engineering A.
o Continue to use the white College of Engineering form for COE petitions.
You may download this form from the COE web site.
http://www.engr.psu.edu/Forms/
New process instruction regarding petitions:
1. Student must discuss the petition with his/her advisor. Advisor signature is
required. After signing the form the advisor will forward it to the UPO.
2. Fill in all required information on the petition. The new form was designed
to streamline the efforts of both the students and staff.
3. Fill in the reverse side of the form if applicable. Please print your form on
both sides to reduce the volume of central file storage space.
4. Provide logical arguments for “reasons”. “Because Messner told me” or
“you lost the first one” are not acceptable, for example.
5. Treat the petition as a serious document. It becomes a permanent part of
your record, both hard copy and electronically. Write in business style and
use proper English. Poorly presented petition will be returned.
COURSE ABBREVIATIONS AND NUMBERS CHANGING
If you cannot find a course number, it probably changed. Check with the university
published information at http://www.senate.psu.edu/scca/uca/uca_legislation.htm
PROGRAM YEAR
At this point, all students should be in 2006 program year which follows the 2006
program (blue). This is on the upper right of the front page of your degree audit.
SUGGESTED SEMESTER SCHEDULE
An effort is made each semester to schedule all required courses without time conflicts.
Course schedules are coordinated for the published pattern for each semester, plus the
“new arrival” third year pattern. Students should refer to
http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/schedule.asp for “suggested schedules”. Student
should follow the published schedule as much as possible to avoid conflicts. It is the
responsibility of the out-of-sequence students to schedule the required courses.
AHS - GI vs. US/IL
Students who started enrollment in Penn State Fall 2005 or later must take at
least 3 credits of US and 3 credits of IL courses. Students who began their
studies prior to Fall 2005 must take 3 credits of GI which is either US or IL. For
more details refer to http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/ae_gen_eds.asp
Many of the GH courses also fulfill the US/IL requirements. Participation in Study
Abroad automatically satisfies IL.
SEDE DI ROMA – SUMMER 2008
Due to the lead time necessary for passports and visas, we may not have
enough time to process students not already applied and following the schedule.
SECOND YEAR ENGAE STUDENTS
For Spring 2008, schedule courses shown on the suggested schedule
http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/schedule.asp
Schedule EMCH 13 this spring. Both EMCH11 and EMCH13 are prerequisites
for AE308, a course in the 5th semester. If necessary, use the summer to
complete EMCH13. (CE340 will no longer be an acceptable substitute for AE308.
Missing AE308 in your 5th semester will set you back a year.)
ENGAE students should schedule 3 credits of ARCH130A in the fall and spring
of the second year. 6 credits total are required. ARCH130A must be taken as a
fall-spring sequence. Third year student should sign up for Section 003 to avoid
conflicts with AE310 and AE311.
AE221 and AE222 must be scheduled concurrently. You will be dis-enrolled if
you only sign up for one course.
Do not schedule any course that conflicts with ARCH130A without consulting
with Prof. Ling.
THIRD YEAR STUDENTS – NEW ARRIVALS (students not an ENGAE 2nd year)
Take AE309, 310, 311 and 372 in the spring semester (if not taken already). You
will be selecting an option by the end of spring semester. These courses are
designed to give you an understanding of each option.
The Architecture Department is offering a special section of ARCH130A MWF
between 11:00 and 1:30. ARCH130A must be taken as a fall-spring sequence.
Do not postpone taking ARCH130A till the fourth year.
THIRD YEAR STUDENTS
Third year students should complete AE308, AE309, AE310, AE311 and AE372
in the third year. AE308, AE310, AE311 and AE372 are C-required courses.
If you are thinking about going to the Leeds study abroad program Fall semester
of the fourth year,
o Do not take Arch211 in the spring. You will get this course in Leeds.
Please sign up for one of the courses below in its place.
o If you are thinking about the Lighting/Electrical option, sign up for AE444
in the 6th semester. You will need this for AE464 when you return. You will
take AE461 via the Internet while in Leeds.
o Stat401 is suggested for students in other options.
o If you are interested in study abroad in Leeds, you are required to see
Prof. Ling for additional information.
FOURTH YEAR STUDENTS
If you expect to have a time conflict with ARCH442, you must inform the faculty.
The architecture faculty are expecting student to not conflict with studio time.
CE336 has been reduced to 3 credits. CE337 is the one credit lab. You must
take both CE336 and CE337. If CE337 is full, you must see the CE Department
for the possibility of be admitted to the class.
FIFTH YEAR STUDENTS
Check to see that you will have all the requirements lined up for graduation.
If you have any petitions, the general rule is that you must file them one semester
prior to your graduation. The Dean will NOT consider petitions filed in your last
semester! Don’t wait. Check your degree audit. If things are not as you expect
them, you probably need to file a petition.
If you are planning on graduating this semester, you must go on to eLion at this
time and activate the Intent to Graduate.
MAE/BAE STUDENTS
If you are expecting to graduate this semester, you must activate you “intent to
graduate” status on e-Lion.
Your undergraduate degree audit will be missing 6 credits. You must follow your
program of study filed when you applied for the program. Alterations to course
selections and proposed schedule must be approved in advance. It is important
to understand the reasons for listing a course as GRC and IUG. Please keep
track of your progress using information provided on the web page.
See the following faculty for MAE advice.
Dr. Mistrick – Graduate Program Officer
Dr. Hanagan - Structural Option
Dr. Bahnfleth - Mechanical Option
Dr. Mistrick - Lighting /Electrical Option
Dr. Horman – Construction Option
MINORS
If you are getting a Minor, go to the department offering the minor and fill out the
necessary paper work. Don’t wait till the last minute. Once you missed the
deadline, the minor will not be granted.
WELCOME ABOARD!
We want to extend our warmest welcome to two newest members to the
Architectural Engineering faculty.
Dr. Chimay Anumba assumed the position of Department Head at the beginning
of the year. He comes to us from Loughborough University in UK. See Penn
Statre Live for more details http://live.psu.edu/story/27874
Dr. Kevin Houser joins the Lighting/Electrical faculty. He served in the same
capacity at University of Nebraska Omaha. He is one of our own, having earned
his degrees in AE. His arrived so recently that the new release has not been
published.
Please give both Dr. Anumba and Dr. Houser your personal welcome.
