Advising Notes - Vol. 5 No. 6 - 21 April 24, 2009
This instrument is intended for communications with all AE students and prospective AE students. Anyone wishing to be added to or deleted from the listserv should notify Prof. Moses D. F. Ling mosesling@psu.edu All AE and ENGAE students must remain on the listserv.
CONGRATULATIONS TO STUDENTS GRADUATING THIS SPRING
Every student, who registered for every required credit in the AE program this spring semester, is eligible to participate in the commencement ceremony. They do not have to worry about a slow posting grade (or an unsuccessful grade).
Please afford the dignity that the ceremony deserves. Dress accordingly, particularly what shows below the gown. Everyone walks up and across the stage. Choose your footwear wisely for managing the steps up and down the platform. You will be shaking the hands of the platform party after receiving your little scroll. This is your big day!
CAPS AND GOWNS are different for undergraduate and graduate ceremonies. Even the gowns are different colors. Please buy the set(s) you need. The hood color for Mater of Architectural Engineering is violet. (M.Eng. is orange and M.S. is golden yellow.) ROTC graduates wear their uniform at the undergraduate ceremony.
The AE section is usually on the left side of the BJC. You will be seated in the section marked AE. You will choose your seat as you arrive. Everyone will be in their seats during the processional. The exceptions are the platform party, student and faculty Marshals and other faculty. They process in. The commencement address should be relatively short. Then, by department, graduates go up to the platform. After the recessional, you will be able to retrieve your diploma from the faculty and the Student Marshal along the side wall adjacent to your seats.
A couple of reminders: Please fill out the College of Engineering survey on-line. In 3 or 4 of years, you will be asked again to assess your education, please do it again for us. We need the data to continue our ABET accreditation process. Let blow the College
administrators away with a perfect participation rate. (Only Ag Eng has done that. They only have a few graduates.)
Now is time to say goodbye to all our company… (If you don’t know these lyrics, you were born too late.) Please stay in touch!
IF YOU WILL BE A SECOND YEAR STUDENT IN THE FALL
Read the previous Advising Notes for more information if you have not done so. http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/faculty/ling/advising_notes.asp
The deadline for indicating your preference is coming up May 1st. DO IT NOW.
Please pay attention to the following points:
o You will not receive notification about your admission into AE till around June 1. Students with high GPA’s need not worry at all. There is no need to call me. I will not have the information until about the same time you receive it.
o When you schedule courses, do the best you can to take all the courses in the semester that they are scheduled. Follow the alphabetical halves of the second year by last names. (A-La and Le-Z)
o If you are in a Commonwealth Campus make plans now to be ready to file your change of location as soon as you hear about your admission.
o Everyone is kept out of the controlled courses at this time. (The students showing in these courses now are upper level students.) You should plan and be ready to schedule as soon as you hear. If you have problems, email me. Please register early in June. I would like to not deal with these problems all summer.
o AE221 and AE222 must be taken concurrently (both of them in the same semester). There are a fixed number of desks and we cannot add to these classes.
o AE202 and Arch130A are courses you must take. If necessary, we will add to the enrollment limit.
Please plan on attending the orientation session with me when it is scheduled in the fall. I would very much like everyone to get the same information at one time. You will be assigned an AE advisor after being admitted to the major. Plan to see your advisor regularly. Please check your advisor assignments in July on the AE Advising page. www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/ Remember you are in charge of your own education plan. Get the needed advice from your advisor, not someone down the hall in your dorm.
STUDENTS PLANNING ON ENTERING AE AFTER THE 2ND YEAR
If you are missing a course or your GPA is not as good as you had hoped, and you still wish to be in AE, indicate your 1st preference as AE anyway. Students in this category MUST plan to take ALL the courses in the first three years of the program sheet by the time they choose an option at the end year three. Summer courses may be needed to be on-schedule. Please be advised that AE does not offer any classroom instruction in the summer.
The following sequence are suggested for students in this situation at UP or a Commonwealth Campus.

STUDY ABROAD (IN LEEDS) IS NOW IN THE SPRING OF SECOND YEAR
Students entering the second year interested in the study abroad program at LEEDS and any other non-summer program need to know that the ONLY opportunity to take a semester for study abroad is the fourth semester. Any other semester will cause problems with sequential courses and affect the graduation date.
Students must be totally “on schedule” with the 5-year plan to participate. These students must follow the A-La plan for the 3rd semester. (See the green and yellow blocks on the 5-year plan http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/21%202006%20Prog_5_year_curriculum%2020090207.xls )
Please email Prof. Moses about your interest in the 4th semester study abroad program SPRING 2010. If this option is not going to work out for you, you can take a look at the Rome program or other summer programs.
The Education Abroad (EA) posted the deadline for registration for Spring 2010 programs as 1 April 2009. But don’t worry. We have worked out with EA to let AE students apply as late as 15 September 2009. Therefore, it is imperative that students interested in the Spring 2010 program be ready to commit as soon as they return to UP in the fall. Acquiring a passport this summer is a good idea. The passport must be valid 6 months beyond your stay abroad.
COURSE SCHEDULE CHANGES
The scheduled time for several courses has changed. If you have already scheduled these courses, the Registrar will make the adjustments for you. If there is a conflict, you will be notified. As we worked hard to fit the courses in, we anticipate very few students will experience problems.
o AE401 and AE402 – AE401 is now scheduled for 9:05 to 9:55 MTWRF (5 days). AE402 is scheduled for 1:25 TO 2:15 MWF. Basically, these two course switched times.
o AE467 will move from TR 8:00-9:15 to TR 2:15 to 3:30. Happy sleeping in!
o AE497B (1 credit) – Basics for Communication Systems will be scheduled for W 6:30 -8:30. This course will be offered only in the FALL from now on. (L/E 5th years please pay particular attention.)
If you have any questions, please first see your advisor. Pre-AE students should continue to utilize the Engineering Advising Center. Prof. Bowers (AE221 and AE22) is the AE representative at the EAC and takes appointment Fridays 2:00 – 5:00 pm this semester.
