Advising Notes - Vol. 6 No. 1 - May 22, 2009
This instrument is intended for communications with all AE students and prospective AE students.
Topics:
o Scheduling typical semesters in the AE program
o Second Year ENGAE Students – Fall 2009
o Students interested in entering AE after their 2nd year – Fall 2010
o Study Abroad – Leeds
o Study Abroad - Rome
Scheduling typical semesters in the AE program
For scheduling of courses students should refer to “suggested schedules” posted
on the advising page. http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/schedule.asp
Incoming Second Year ENGAE student – Fall 2009
The notification to students admitted to ENGAE status will be emailed at the end
of May/beginning of June. As soon as the records are changed by the registrar’s
office, ENGAE students will then be able to schedule the controlled courses.
Students from Commonwealth Campuses will be able to schedule University
Park courses. (Reminder to students from Commonwealth Campuses: ENGAE
students must study at University Park. Not doing so will forfeit the ENGAE
status. ENGAE students must be enrolled in the recommended AE courses or
risk having to return to the Commonwealth campus.)
A student’s academic plan is the responsibility of the student. Information is
provided from a number of sources to help students understand the program.
Studying the information posted on the AE Advising website is strongly
encouraged. http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/ The semester schedules were
generated considering prerequisites, schedule conflicts and work load. They
were put together with the students’ best interest in mind.
The AE program is rather rigid. Therefore, Consulting with your advisor prior to
deviating from the established curriculum is necessary. Students should consult
with their assigned advisor regularly. All new ENGAE students will be assigned
an advisor prior the start of this fall semester. Consult the online faculty advisor
list for your assigned advisor. http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/index.asp
Until the advisors are posted on the AE advising website or on e-Lion, students
may email Prof. Moses for questions. mosesling@psu.edu
For Fall 2009, schedule courses shown on the suggested schedule.
o ALL second year ENGAE students should schedule AE202 in the fall. This
course is offered only once a year. In addition to it stated mission, it was
designed to be the first AE course packed with information you need to go
through the program.
o ENGAE students meeting the prerequisites should schedule EMCH211 in
the fall and EMCH213 in the spring semesters of the second year. (
(EMch212 comes later.) Both EMCH211 and EMCH213 are prerequisites
for AE308, a required course in the 5th semester. Plan on completing both
EMCH211 and EMCH213 before the fall semester of your third year when
AE308 must be taken. Take a summer class if necessary to be able to
take AE308 during the 5th semester.
o EMCH211 sections have been reserved for ENGAE students. Schedule
these sections only if your suggested schedule calls for those time slots.
Please schedule EMch211 as soon as you can. The controls will be lifted
June 15 so other non-AE students can schedule these sections. Don’t
drop them to juggle things. You may not get back into EMch211. After the
sections are open again, there is little I can do to help you.
o ENGAE students should schedule 3 credits of ARCH130A in both fall and
spring of the second year. ARCH130A must be taken as a fall-spring
consecutive sequence.
o Students may schedule EDSGN130 concurrently with ARCH130A if not
taken previously. EDSGN100 is an acceptable substitution. Students need
to complete a petition with his/her advisor. To learn about petitions, see
http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/petition.asp
Congratulations and welcome to Architectural Engineering.
Students interested in entering AE after their 2nd year – Fall 2010
Any student not entering the major at the beginning of the second year has an
opportunity to select AE in the 4th semester (Spring 2009). If this is your plan,
conform to the following instructions as closely as possible.
o Schedule AE and Architecture courses in the third year. Look ahead to the
suggested schedule for “New Arrivals” in the 5th and the 6th semesters.
http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/schedule.asp
o In the second year, take all other courses listed in the 2nd and 3rd year of
the AE program. For students in Commonwealth campuses, Arch210 and
ArtH202 are not available. Take (GH) or (GS) courses instead. Keep in
mind that 6 credits are needed in each category (GA) (GS) and (GH). A 9-
6-3 rule allows student to take up to 9 credits in one category. Also make
sure you satisfy the (US/IL) requirement. ArtH202 is an (US/IL) course.
Therefore, it satisfies one of the two required diversity course requirement.
Studying abroad automatically satisfies the (IL) requirement.
o Take EMCH211 in the 3rd semester and EMCH13 in the 4th semester.
These courses are prerequisites for AE308 taken in the 5th semester.
o The goal is to have all the courses listed for the first three years completed
during the first three years prior to selecting an option. Completing all
required courses is necessary prior to option selection (end of 3rd year).

Study Abroad - Leeds
Students interested in studying abroad should know that the Leeds program has
been moved to the 4th semester. The 4th semester (yellow) is designated as a
study abroad semester. Students should plan on taking these courses abroad.
Students must complete all courses in the first 3 semesters prior to studying
abroad. Students may choose other locations for this experience. Consult your
advisor.
Please note that the University Office of Global Program’s deadline for spring
2010 has passed. AE students interested will be given the opportunity to
complete the application by the first two weeks of the Fall Semester. Please
express your interest in doing so with Prof. Moses. mosesling@psu.edu
