Welcome to the start of another exciting semester and football season! There are
a few pieces of important information and reminders summarized in this edition of
AE Advising Notes.

Flu Risk Precaution and Good Practice

As you already know the H1N1 flu is a major health concern around the world. As
thousand of college students return to campus, the University is very concern about the
possibility of a widespread problem in this community. The college age group is among
the most susceptible to this virus. Everyone is asked to think and act responsibly. The
University has published guidelines as a preemptive move to curb the problem.
o Increase good hygiene practices. Wash hands as frequently as possible. Use
what you learn in kindergarten, soap up and scrub for the duration it takes to sing
“Happy Birthday”.
o Practice good cough/cold etiquette.
o If you are exhibiting symptoms from influenza, impose self-isolation. Do not go to
class or other public gatherings. During this alert period, you will NOT need a
doctor’s excuse. Do not overload the medical services with this type of request.
Especially, do not see a faculty in person to show him/her you are sick. We will
set up a centralized AE sick leave data base. Email aesickleave@engr.psu.edu
to let us know that you have flu symptoms and the length of self isolation period.
We will advise the appropriate AE faculty.
o Students are asked to return home to recover if possible. The effects of the flu
typically lasts a week.
o Make arrangement to have a buddy help with food, class notes, etc. in advance.
o It is very important for affected individuals to avoid spreading the virus.
o It is anticipated that student will complete all assignments and exams. Faculty will
provide reasonable opportunities to make up missed work.

EDUCATION ABROAD

Three opportunities are listed below. Students are encouraged to visit the Office of
Global Programs (410 Boucke Building) to investigate other opportunities. An
information session regarding the AE study abroad program is planned for mid-
September.

LEEDS Exchange Program – SPRING 2010
Leeds exchange program is now in the spring for second year students. You must be on
track with the 5-year program and be in AE202, AE221, AE222 and Arch130A fall
semester. See Professor Ling for more information and other study abroad options.
Commitment date is the beginning of September for Spring 2010 participants!
There are 5 Leeds students studying in our program this year. Please welcome them.

SEDE DI ROMA – SUMMER 2010
Due to the number of students interested and the lead time necessary to make
arrangements, the deadline for the initial commitment will be 1 December 2009.
TSINGHUA UNIVERSITY, Beijing, China - SUMMER 2010 *NEW
We are in conversation with the organizers of Tsinghua Summer School for International
Construction and Property. This is an upper level education abroad opportunity. Students
must complete the third year course work by summer 2010 to qualify. Please visit
www.globalprogram.cn for program information of the 2009 summer school.
An expanded summer experience is an option depending of the level of interest. This
includes some time in Hong Kong. Please let Prof. Ling know if you are interested.

Academic Advising Issues

Kimberly LyleWELCOME Mrs. Kim Lyle
Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Kim Lyle as the Administrative Support
Assistant of Undergraduate Student Records. She is the new lady in the
window on the first floor of Engineering A. Kim will be supporting Prof. Ling
with all administrative aspects of the undergraduate program. Please stop
by and say hello to her. She is your advocate for all course registration and
student record issues.

ADVISOR ASSIGNMENT

o All pre-major (ENGR or DUS) are advised through the Engineering Advising
Center. Please make appointments with the EAC.
o All ENGAE students have been assigned an AE faculty advisor upon
entering into the major.
o Honor students were assigned an AE honors advisor starting the first year.
o As students switch to MAE/BAE status they will be assigned to an option faculty
in charge of the respective option of the IP Program, with the exception of
Schreyer honors students. Honor students will continue to have the same
advisor.
During Dr. Messner’s sabbatical leave this academic year, his advisees should consult
with Prof. Ling or any other advisor.

SUGGESTED SEMESTER SCHEDULE

An effort is made each semester to schedule all required courses without time conflicts.
Course schedules are coordinated for the published pattern for each semester, plus the
“new arrival” third year pattern. Student should follow the published schedule as much
as possible to avoid conflicts. Out-of-sequence students must take responsibility for
scheduling the required courses and working out schedule conflicts.
Students should refer to http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/schedule.asp for
“suggested schedules”. (Spring 2010 schedules are being updated soon). Do NOT
attempt to create your own version of the program without consultation with an advisor.
This is particularly important for ROTC students. Fitting another 15 or 18 credits into the
program is difficult. There most likely will be scheduling conflicts to resolve.
Students must complete all required courses prior to selecting an option at the end of 3rd
year.

First Year ENGR and DUS students interested in Architectural Engineering
The student’s responsibility is to complete the first year with a good academic record
and the 4 entrance-to-major courses (Math140, Math141, Chem110, and Phys211).
There are limited numbers of opening in the program. At the end of Spring Semester
2010 (not summer), students are selected into the program in descending GPA order.
See an advisor at the Engineering Advising Center (208 Hammond) or advisors at the
commonwealth campuses. Stay with the prescribed courses in the AE program. The AE
5-year program is rather rigid. Therefore, do not deviate from it casually. Look ahead
and plan future semesters.

Do not oversubscribe to Gen Ed courses. The 6 credits of GA courses must be
ARCH210 and ARCH211 (or Art H 202). You have an option to take up to 9 credits in
any of the categories, GA/GH/GS. Keep in mind the US/IL requirements.
Please keep up with your course work.

o Manage your time well. Take advantage of the little pieces of time. They tend to
slip away from you.

o You are participating in a completion next spring. You are in training. Do what
any athlete would do getting ready for competition.

o It probably takes more time than you anticipate. So, do the work immediately
after class and see how long it takes. You will have some statistics to base future
planning on. You will also free up the evenings to participate in other activities.

o Reviewing right after class helps retention of the material. You will not remember
a fraction of the material if you wait till the night before exams several weeks
later.

o If Math is a concern, go to the math help center routinely. Don’t wait till the
problem becomes too big. Dropping Math140 or Math141 will take a student out
of running for the selection process next spring. See the Program Guide for the
2nd year window.

o Learn the material well enough to teach someone. Try it on your roommate.
I am convinced all ENGR students have the intellectual capacity to succeed. The most
important ingredients come from the student; the desire, self-motivation and diligence.
I hope to see you in the next incoming class of AE students.

Second Year ENGAE students

All ENGAE students admitted summer 2009 must follow the AE second year
schedule. ENGAE students must register for AE202 and Arch130A this fall. Even
if you have not, go to the appropriate classes Monday and Tuesday. Speak with
the instructors. See Kim Lyle in 104 Engineering A to adjust your schedule.
A student’s academic plan is the responsibility of the student. Information is
provided from a number of sources to help students understand the program.
Studying the information posted on the AE Advising website is strongly
encouraged. http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/ The semester schedules were
generated considering prerequisites, schedule conflicts and work load. They
were put together with the students’ best interest in mind.

The AE program is rather rigid. Therefore, Consulting with your advisor prior to
deviating from the established curriculum is necessary. Students should consult
with their assigned advisor regularly. All new ENGAE students will be assigned
an advisor prior the start of this fall semester. Consult the online faculty advisor
list for your assigned advisor. http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/index.asp
For Fall 2009, schedule courses shown on the suggested schedule.

o ALL second year ENGAE students should schedule AE202 in the fall. This
course is offered only once a year. In addition to its stated mission, the
course was designed to be the first AE course packed with information
you need to go through the program.

o ENGAE students meeting the prerequisites should schedule EMCH211 in
the fall and EMCH213 in the spring semesters of the second year.
(EMch212 comes later.) Both EMCH211 and EMCH213 are prerequisites
for AE308, a required course in the 5th semester. Take a summer class if
necessary to be able to take AE308 during the 5th semester.

o ENGAE students should schedule 3 credits of ARCH130A in both fall and
spring semesters of the second year. ARCH130A must be taken as a fallspring
consecutive sequence.

o Students may schedule EDSGN130 concurrently with ARCH130A if not
taken previously. EDSGN100 is an acceptable substitution. Students need
to complete a petition with his/her advisor. To learn about petitions, see
http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/petition.asp
Students interested in entering AE after their 2nd year – Fall 2010
Any student not in the major the second year has an opportunity to select AE in
the 4th semester (Spring 2009). If this is your plan, conform to the following
instructions as closely as possible.

o Your GPA must be 3.0 or better at the end of fall 2009. This is the GPA
being scrutinized during the selection process in the spring.

o Schedule AE and Architecture courses in the third year. Look ahead to the
suggested schedule for “New Arrivals” in the 5th and the 6th semesters.
http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/schedule.asp

o In the second year, take all other courses listed in the 2nd and 3rd year of
the AE program. For students in Commonwealth campuses, Arch210 and
ArtH202 are not available. Take (GH) or (GS) courses instead. Keep in
mind that 6 credits are needed in each category (GA) (GS) and (GH). A 9-
6-3 rule allows student to take up to 9 credits in one category. Also make
sure you satisfy the (US/IL) requirement. ArtH202 is an (US/IL) course.
Therefore, it satisfies one of the two required diversity course requirement.
Studying abroad automatically satisfies the (IL) requirement.

o Take EMCH211 in the 3rd semester and EMCH13 in the 4th semester.
These courses are prerequisites for AE308 taken in the 5th semester.

o The goal is to have all the courses listed for the first three years completed
during the first three years prior to selecting an option. Completing all
required courses is necessary prior to option selection (end of 3rd year).

THIRD YEAR STUDENTS – NEW ARRIVALS

Follow the suggest schedule for 5th and 6th semester – New Arrivals.
http://www.engr.psu.edu/ae/advising/schedule.asp

Take AE202, AE308, AE221, AE222 and ARCH130A in the fall. Take ARCH130A,
AE309, 310, 311 and 372 in the spring semester (if not taken already). You will be
selecting an option in the spring of your third year. These courses are designed to give
you an understanding of each option.

ARCH130A must be taken as a fall-spring sequence. Do not postpone taking
ARCH130A till the fourth year.

THIRD YEAR STUDENTS
Third year students should complete AE308, AE309, AE310, AE311 and AE372 in the
third year. AE308, AE310, AE311 and AE372 are C-required courses. Keep in mind that
these courses are offered only once a year. Schedule them in the proper semester.
The spring semester is a coordinate semester with four AE courses. AE students must
complete all required course prior to being able to select an option. The third year
curriculum is designed to help students with option selection before fourth year. Please
also be prepared to attend the DC trip in the spring, 19-21 March 2010, the weekend
after spring break. The trip is being re-designed to expose students to all facets of
architectural engineering. We are including an evening event with alumni in the area.

FOURTH YEAR STUDENTS

If you expect to have a time conflict with either ARCH441 or ARCH442, you must inform
Mrs. Kimberly Lyle. The architecture faculty expects student to not have conflicts with
studio time.

If you are looking at old program guides and publications, you should know that CE336
is now a 3 credit course. CM students will need to sign up for both CE336 andCE337.
Please make use of your higher credit-standing wisely and sign up early for these
courses. They will fill up quickly when the lower credit-standing CE students start
registering. When CE courses are full, there is nothing the AE Department can do to get
you in. Work out your schedule so you don’t have to change things involving CE
courses.

FIFTH YEAR STUDENTS

Check to see that you will have all the requirements for graduation by the time you
expect to graduate.

If you have any petitions, you must file them one semester prior to your graduation. All
petitions filed previously should be reflected in your degree audit now. Don’t wait. Check
your degree audit. Make sure you have the (+) and (-) as you expect. See your advisor
for advice. Petition forms are available from Mrs. Kimberly Lyle at the window of 104
Engineering A and in the 2nd floor cubbies.

MAE/BAE STUDENTS

If you are expecting to graduate this semester, you must activate your “intent to
graduate” status on e-Lion.
You must follow your program of study filed when you applied for the program or
updated since. Alterations to course selections and proposed schedule must be
approved in advance.

For IP students currently in the 5th year, you are required to take (6) 500-level courses.
One of them will be spring semester thesis. Pay close attention to announcement and
discussions in thesis class lectures regarding this matter.

Please keep track of your progress using worksheets provided on the MAE/BAE web
page. The MAE degree audit is not yet perfected.
See the following faculty for MAE advice.
Dr. Hanagan – Graduate Program Officer
Dr. Hanagan - Structural Option
Dr. Srebric - Mechanical Option
Dr. Mistrick - Lighting /Electrical Option
Dr. Horman – Construction Option

MINORS

If you are pursuing a minor, go to the department offering the minor and fill out the
necessary paper work. Don’t wait till the last minute. The sooner you do it the sooner
you will see the degree audit tracking your progress in the minor.

ENJOY THE BEIGNING OF ANOTHER SEMESTER. GREAT TO HAVE YOU
BACK.
