Building Blocks - Vol. 1, No. 3
Honestly Speaking…
Several weeks ago, I read the Daily Collegian Opinion column entitled “Napster not for student’s benefit, but university‘s." I was greatly disturbed by the author’s standards of what is right or wrong. While the columnist is a graduate student in Media Studies, her opinion is totally off base. What has happen to societal standards?
This is just one instance that led me to wonder if integrity is no longer an attribute at the top of contemporary people’s list. It has been downplayed by the media so much that it is seemingly unimportant. Integrity is simply the conviction one has to do that which is right, especially when no one is watching. Consider if you want that particular episode of your life played out on the big screen. If you don’t, don’t do it.
Allow me to share a concept I learned from my father some time ago. It has help me when I run into situations in gray areas.
“Black and white are absolute values. Gray exists when black is added to white. Very little black is needed to tint a white material gray. The darker the gray becomes, the more difficult it is to distinguish the differences. No matter how much white is added back, it will not be pure white again.”
