Securing Y Drive Files and Folders
So,
You have some files here you want to keep safe, yet you need others to be able to see them.
Well, not only is it possible, it's quite easy. Follow these instructions and you'll be in
good shape... (If you use XP Home Edition, set the security from a lab computer)
1. Create a folder for yourself on the Y: drive, call it anything you'd like
2. Using Windows Explorer, right click on the new folder and select "Properties"
3. Select the "Security" tab, you'll see a long list of people capable of changing your files (Bad!)
4. Click the "Advanced" tab at the bottom right of the window
5. While inside the "Permissions" tab, uncheck the "Inherit from parent..." check box
6. Are you sure? Yeah, select "Remove"
7. Next, click the "Add" button
8. Type in your PSUAE user name and click "OK"
- if it can't find your account, check the location and object type above in the same window
9. "Allow" your account "Full Control" by checking the appropriate check box
- make sure this is applied onto "This folder, subfolders, and files"
10. click "OK" to accept the permissions for your account
11. Add the account "system" with full control for backup purposes!
You can add other accounts such as group members or friends; whoever you want, so long as
they have an AE account.
To allow anybody to see what's in your folder without the worry of them changing or
deleting files, add the user "Everyone" and select the option to "Allow" them
"Read Permissions", "Traverse Folder/Execute File", "List Folder/Read Data",
"Read Attributes", and "Read Extended Attributes".
Once you get the permission entries you need, "Apply" them and click "OK" a couple times to exit.
Permissions aren't just for folders, you can set them on individual files and subfolders
as well.
