AE  CHALLENGE  GRANT  MATCHED

AE Newsletter - Fall/Winter 2001

In 2001, the Architectural Engineering Academic Excellence Endowment was established through the generosity of AE alumnus Eugene Bard, ’68, President of Bard, Rao & Athanas in Boston. He decided to start the AE Academic Excellence Endowment as a source of funding to allow the AE Department the flexibility necessary to capitalize on unexpected opportunities and to develop and support architectural engineering’s cutting-edge strengths. The funds may be used to recruit new faculty, equip new laboratories, support student conferences and programs or seed new, exciting research initiatives. Bard created a “challenge grant” - putting down the first $100,000 if AE alumni and friends could come up with an additional $100,000. The gauntlet was immediately picked up by Charles Matts, ’56, who contributed $50,000 to the new department fund. “It sounded like a good idea,” said Matts. “They’re trying to build the program, and I wanted to help out.”

We are extremely pleased to report, that through the generosity of 186 donors, including cash received and pledges established over the next four years, we have raised a total of $237,484 for the AE Academic Excellence Endowment.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of our alumni and friends who have made this endowment a reality. The Endowment will have a lasting positive impact on the AE Department, allowing us to enhance the education opportunities for our students, providing critical support in building and maintaining talented faculty in the AE Department, and supporting innovative activities in teaching and research for the good of the whole department.

Additional contributions to the AE Academic Excellence Endowment may be made by interested persons or organizations by contacting Richard Swails in the Penn State College of Engineering Development Office at 814-865-2496.
