| The
Department of Architectural Engineering was pleased to host the Marvin J.
Kudroff Memorial Lecture on September 21, 2001, at the Atherton Hotel.
Featured speaker, Mr. John Labosky ’71, President, Capital
City Partnership, Saint Paul, Minnesota, spoke about “City Building.” He
discussed the forces shaping the growth and design of buildings, public spaces
and cities, as well as the role of architects, engineers, planners and
developers in the process.
The Capital City Partnership is a private/non-profit corporation funded by
over 50 larger Twin Cities metropolitan area businesses dedicated to
revitalizing the urban core of Saint Paul. Labosky has led private sector
efforts to secure the new Minnesota Wild NHL Expansion franchise for the city
and construct the new $175 million Xcel Energy Center, and to create the new
Saint Paul on the Mississippi Development Framework (master plan). He led
efforts to bring Lawson Software to St. Paul and develop a new $100 million
office complex. He has also led partnership efforts in downtown Saint Paul
that has resulted in $1.7 billion of new downtown construction, 1.5 million
square feet of new office space absorption, 20% per year increases in property
values and 18,000 new jobs created. The success of the Capital City
Partnership has been recognized with a series of national and state awards
including the U.S. Conference of Mayors Award of Excellence-as the nation’s
best public/private partnership.
Labosky has an educational background in architecture, engineering, and law
and possesses professional registrations in both engineering and law. He
received a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering degree in 1971 from Penn
State and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Detroit School of Law
in 1978
Mr. Labosky has received a series of honors and awards from educational
institutions and professional societies, and serves as Director of many for
