2002 OUTSTANDING ENGINEERING ALUMNUS

Mr. Joel Weinstein, P.E. was named AE’s Outstanding Engineering Alumnus, an award presented by the College of Engineering. He will receive his award at a ceremony to be held on campus on April 15, 2002.

Mr. Weinstein, a 1967 alumnus of Architectural Engineering and a past recipient of the prestigious Merit Award of Excellence in Architectural Engineering, is president of LZA Associates, a division of The Thornton-Tomasetti Group, and one of the firm’s eleven managing principals. This year, Mr. Weinstein was elected to the Board of Directors of The Thornton-Tomasetti Group, which employs nearly 500 people in eleven offices throughout the U.S., as well as in London and Hong Kong. In addition to his responsibilities at LZA Associates, Mr. Weinstein is responsible for overseeing the firm’s corporate marketing and business development, successfully spearheading a public relations campaign to increase the company’s visibility.

Mr. Weinstein strives to find creative engineering and architectural solutions to design challenges in a way that will be elegant, cost-effective and practical. He has been responsible for the design of a wide-range of facilities, from stadiums to residential structures, from high-rise buildings to advanced technology facilities on business sites and university campuses. Over the years, Mr. Weinstein worked on a number of high-profile projects, including an in-depth investigation of the structural design for Bally’s Park Place Casino Hotel Complex in Atlantic City, the restoration and preservation of the Empire State Building, and the conversion of the landmark Cooper Hewitt residence into a museum for the Smithsonian Institute. Mr. Weinstein also has a great deal of experience with structural systems and structural vibration investigations. He has performed an investigation and developed remedial design repair plans for the sub-grade levels of New York’s World Trade Center, as well as four historic buildings at the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY

In addition to his impressive work portfolio at LZA Associates, Mr. Weinstein is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture at Pratt Institute and was an Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture at the New York Institute of Technology prior to that. He gives numerous lectures and presentations to various professional groups and is an active leader in a wide-range of professional engineering organizations.

Over the years, Mr. Weinstein has shared his professional experiences with the AE Department by way of guest lectures to various AE classes, by serving on the AE Senior Thesis Jury, and attending the AE Career Fair as representative and recruiter for The Thornton-Tomasetti Group.
