HONORS
In
November 2001, Dr. Louis Geschwindner was elected Fellow of the
Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI) in recognition of his contributions
to the building industry and to AEI and for his work to increase professionalism
and technical knowledge of the profession.
Dr.
Jelena Srebric, Assistant Professor of AE, was awarded a three-year
grant from the Centers for Disease Control for a research project titled,
“An Indoor Environment Design Tool for Entire Buildings.” The goal of
the project is to create an integrated design tool that will have the
ability to calculate indoor air quality and thermal comfort for an entire
building. The studies on indoor environment are very important because
more than half of the U.S. workforce is employed indoors and a typically
worker spends 90 percent of his or her time indoors. Workers’ health
and productivity are influenced by indoor environmental conditions.
Srebric hopes to create an integrated tool that will consist of three
major components: building models, a heating, ventilating and air-conditioning
model, and heat source/sink models. The tool will be capable of evaluating
indoor air quality and thermal comfort in terms of contaminant concentrations,
mean age of air, ventilation effectiveness, airflow pattern, air velocity,
air velocity fluctuation, air temperature, relative humidity, percentage
of people dissatisfied due to draft, and percentage of predicted dissatisfied
people in an entire building. An important practical application of
this tool is in design of immune buildings capable of responding to
chemical or biological attacks within the structure.
Dr.
Richard A. Behr, Dept. Head of AE, received a special award from
the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) in recognition
of his research and leadership in developing AAMA-approved seismic test
methods for architectural glass and curtain wall systems. Dr. Behr received
this award and presented results of this initiative at the AAMA Annual
Meeting in Palm Springs, CA in January 2002.
NEW
KIDS ON THE BLOCK
On September 18, Dr. Thomas Boothby and wife, Anne, adopted a
beautiful newborn baby girl. Kathryn Louise - 4 lbs 12 oz. joins big
sister Clara (9).
Dr. Richard Behr, Head, Dept. of
AE, and wife, Judy, are the proud new parents of twins. The babies,
born December 5. Mary Judith - 5 lbs. 10 oz. and Samuel Richard - 4
lbs. join big sister Emma (6).
ENGINEERING OPEN
HOUSE
Special thanks to Dr. Martin Moeck and AE student volunteers
who coordinated tours of the AE Department facilities during the semi-annual
College of Engineering Open House held October 20. Prospective students
and their parents enjoyed the tours and interaction with AE students
and faculty. The next Open House is planned for Saturday, March 16,
2002. |

FACULTY/STAFF
Dr.
Martin Moeck joined the AE faculty in August 2001. He earned a M.S.
in Architectural Engineering from the University of Kansas, and M.S.
and Ph.D. degrees in Architecture at the University of Stuttgart, Germany.
He was formerly an Assistant Professor in the Architectural Engineering
Department and Director of the Space and Light Laboratory in the School
of Architecture at the University of Kansas at Lawrence. His research
interests are in the area of computer-aided design of architectural
lighting.
Dr.
John I. Messner earned his B.A.E. and Ph.D. degrees in Architectural
Engineering, Construction Management from Penn State University. He
joined Penn State in January 2001 as Assistant Professor of Architectural
Engineering. Effective January 2002, he has been appointed to tenure
track faculty position in the Construction Management option.
Cary W. Ohl, joined the staff of the Facilities Engineering
Institute as Building Systems Consultant in November 2001.
James N. Grim, joined the staff of the Facilities Engineering
Institute as Senior Analyst/Programmer in January 2002.
G. Wayne Royer joined the AE main office staff as Bookkeeper
in August 2001. He formerly worked as a Bookkeeper in the Dept. of Civil
& Environmental Engineering at Penn State.
COMMENCEMENT
Commencement for the College of Engineering was held on December 15,
2001. Architectural Engineering conferred 21 B.A.E., 16 M.A.E., two
M.S., and one M.Eng. degrees. An afternoon reception was held in the
Kunkle Lounge for the AE graduates, their guests, and the AE faculty
and staff.
FAREWELL
Laura Miller, Engineer, Facilities Engineering Institute,
has accepted an Engineer position at the Penn State Office of the Physical
Plant effective December 2001.
