AE SERVING HIS COUNTRY

In July 2003, Ryan Misero ’01, reported from Iraq with the 358th Civil Affairs Brigade. I am a staff sergeant on the public facilities team stationed at Camp Babylon, Iraq. I am actually the housing and construction ministerial representative for the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (IMEF), which covers all of southern Iraq. We were here during the war to mitigate any impact on Iraqi civilians and provide humanitarian assistance whenever possible. That role took me all over southern Iraq; I've seen the city of Ur (the first place where bricks were used in construction and the birthplace of Abraham), the Garden of Eden, and I currently live on the west balcony of Saddam's palace that overlooks Babylon. It's really quite amazing! Recently our role has developed into a mission to rebuild the nation and the chief of staff of IMEF assigned me to the Ministry of Housing and Construction. We will solve issues such as local and national budgeting, residential and urban planning. I have been here since before the war and I hope to make it home before Christmas, but until then we are all working to make this country free and to make the lives of the Iraqi people much better.

AE ALUMNI HONORS

The 5th year senior thesis of James A. Shipe ’02, has been published on the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) web site as an example of the use of steel for blast resistance in buildings.
Shipe’s thesis, which was also chosen as one of the top eight of his graduating class, investigated the feasibility of blast-hardening a commercial office building, Washingtonian North, a steel structure in Gaithersburg, MD. His redesign incorporated three main concepts to resist the effects of a car bomb explosion along the building's front facade. It was found that a Vierendeel truss, closer column spacings, and concrete-encased steel columns could prevent progressive collapse of the building.
James Shipe is a graduate structural engineer with URS Corporation in Washington, DC.

Jeffrey Gerwing ’98 was named an associate for SmithGroup in Detroit, MI. In addition, he was recognized at the 2003 International Illumination Design Awards as the recipient of lighting design’s top honor, the Edwin Guth Award of Distinction, for his work on the passenger tunnel at Detroit’s new metro airport.
