In May I traveled to England and visited with John
and Maureen Baily (photo below). John was the professor at the University of
Leeds who coordinated our inaugural foreign study program. I didn't have time
to visit the Leeds campus on this trip, but stayed two blocks from our
classroom at the King's Manor in York. During this trip, John and Maureen
invited us for a wonderful dinner at their lovely restored mill house in
Topcliffe, a small village north of York. Some sad news, near the end of 2002,
Dr. Haughton-Evans died after falling and hitting his head while jogging. John
is doing consulting work, including work for Lincoln Cathedral, and said he
keeps in touch with Howard Kingsbury.

I traveled with a friend and my mother on this trip, driving nearly 1,000
miles from London to the Cotswolds and Yorkshire, as well as visiting with
Agnello Gomes and his family in Wales. Agnello was one of the Leeds students
who befriended us Yanks in Bodington Hall during our Spring 1977 term. Their
two children are out of school, but still living at home and working in
Swansea. Visiting the Great Glasshouse at the National Botanic Garden of Wales
was interesting not just for its engineering but its micro environments. The
gardens have only been open for three years, but have a good start on
developing some fine exhibits. Traffic in England is becoming unbearable in
many areas, even where you might least expect it. The Chelsea Flower Show in
London was fabulous again this year, although the crowds are so great, I
probably won't return next year. We visited many of the sites that I hadn't
seen since college, including Castle Howard, Selby Abbey, and Beverly Minster.
York Minster looks fine again, after the fire restoration, as does Windsor
Castle.
Working at Benatec Associates, my work has been mainly as a building code
consultant in Columbus, OH, for the past ten years. Keeping myself very active
volunteering in civic activities, having my garden on tour, and co-hosting the
annual summer picnic and holiday parties for the local Penn State chapter. I
return to campus at least once a year to march with the Alumni Band in the
Homecoming Parade and at the game, but don't usually see many other AE alumni.
John Baily asked about others in our class, but the only one I had seen from
our Leeds group in recent years is Rich Applebaum, also in the Alumni
Band.
Let's hear from more of you in the class of '78!
