A new professional development program has recently been
implemented in collaboration with PACE companies and the construction management
faculty in AE. The goal of the program is to introduce CM students to the skills
and traits they will need to develop in the early phase of their professional
careers.
The program defines a set of skills and traits identified by PACE companies
as valuable to successful careers in CM including: written communication,
managing group dynamics, running a meeting, ethics, effective negotiation,
stress management, career planning, time management, accountability, initiative,
outcome oriented, problem solver, professionalism and collaboration.
CM students will be introduced to this program in the fall semester of their
4th year. Initially, they assess the areas of the program where they have the
greatest opportunities for growth, meet with their CM advisor to discuss the
program, and set their own program goals. Throughout the academic year and
summer internships, students will take part in activities (in and outside of
class) to develop in these areas. Students will be assessed on their progress
towards realistic personal goals, and on the improvement they make relative to
initial benchmarks defined by the student and advisor. A final assessment will
be conducted at the end of the student’s fifth year, and outstanding efforts
will be recognized at the PACE Research Seminar in the spring.
