10th ANNUAL AE CAREER FAIR
AE Newsletter - Fall/Winter 2004
It is with great pride that we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the AE Career Fair on Nov. 4, 2003.  Since our modest beginning in 1993, with 45 companies and 200 students participating, we have twice outgrew our facilities in the HUB, necessitating the move to Rec Hall in 1998.  We now regularly have around 130 companies and an estimated 600 students turn out for this event.  In addition to the Penn State AE students, this year we were once again pleased to host students from the AE programs at North Carolina A&T State University, Tennessee State University, Pennsylvania College of Technology, and State College Area High School, as well as students from the College of Arts and Architecture and from other Penn State engineering departments.

With close to 1,000 AE students having graduated from the AE program over the past ten years, as well as the countless AE undergraduate students and visiting students who have obtained internships or full-time permanent positions, it is clear that the AE Career Fair has been a catalyst for a great number of students finding jobs. Senior exit surveys list the AE Career Fair as the number one placement activity where students were connected with the companies with whom they accepted their post-graduate jobs. Most students entertain multiple job offers. Surveys that are conducted with the company attendees at the Career Fair indicate that they are very well pleased with our students and they overwhelmingly declare that the AE education has prepared the students well to “hit the ground running,” as productive employees from the very start. It is clear that we have a “win-win” formula on our hands!

I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the support of all participating industry colleagues and alumni over the past 10 years. Through the ups and downs of the economy and building industry, you have unfailing provided your support and generous sponsorship that is critical in holding this major event in the AE Department. Without all of you the annual AE Career Fair would not be possible.

On behalf of the AE Department and all of the AE students, thank you!

M. Kevin Parfitt
Director, AE Career Fair
