| AE students Larry
Good, Scott Hubler and Rebecca Mittel were first place
winners of the ASHRAE 2003 Student Design Project Competition, HVAC System
Selection Category. The award included a $1,500 prize plus a trip for one team
representative to attend the ASHRAE Winter Meeting in Anaheim, CA in January
2004 to receive the award.
S:PACE Field Trip
On Oct. 24-25, 2003, the student chapter of PACE traveled to Baltimore, MD, to
visit several unique PACE company construction sites. Gilbane provided a tour
of the Baltimore Detention Center expansion in Towson, MD. Students also
visited renovation work at Foundry on Fort and Tide Point, the home office of
Struever Brothers, Eccles and Rouse. Barton Malow hosted tours of the
University of Maryland’s new Dentistry School and the expansion of the
Baltimore Aquarium. The group also visited Hensel Phelps’ expansion of WBI
Airport. The S:PACE group would like to thank all of the firms who provided
tours for this trip.

Santa’s Helpers
The AE Department once again held the Dear Santa Project to help families in
need during the Christmas holiday season. Thanks to the tremendous generosity
of the AE faculty, staff and students we received enough donations of toys,
clothing and cash to support three “adopted” families with a combined 11
children! Special thanks to the AE student societies, everyone who helped with
wrapping the presents (above), and all who played a part in making the
holidays a little brighter for others in need.
Halloween Fun
AE faculty, staff and students enjoyed a break from the routine as they
celebrated Halloween with an “AE in Vegas” theme. The fun included a
costume parade (top, right), the AE office decked out as famous Las Vegas
casinos, and an “all you can eat Vegas-style buffet lunch.” AE graduate
student Danko Davidovic played an impressive set on his guitar, and AE
department head, Rich Behr performed card tricks. Associate professor Bill
Bahnfleth and graduate teaching assistant Jonathan Dougherty both
showed up in full Elvis regalia and treated on-lookers to their hip-swiveling
rendition of “Viva Las Vegas!” Thank you, thank you very much!
