In Memoriam
The AE Department is sad to announce the death of alum, Martin Uret Dougherty, A.I.A., P.E., of Forty Fort, PA. Marty died on August 7 in an automobile accident in Calabash, N.C.
He was born on Dec. 16, 1949, in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and was the son of the late Aloysius Uret and Pauline Munson Dougherty of Sugar Notch, PA. Marty was a graduate of Ashley-Sugar Notch High School in 1967 and received a bachelor's of architectural engineering degree from Penn State in 1972, where he was a member of the Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity. He was employed at Smith Miller and Associates as an architectural engineer and executive vice president until August 1987. He was also a founding partner and President of The Architecture + Engineering Group Inc., in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Marty was both an accomplished architect and engineer.
Marty was a member of the Pennsylvania Society of Architects and the NCARB. He was an active member of the Penn State Club of the Wyoming Valley, Party of the Month Club, and the Hanover Green Cemetery Association's Board of Directors. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wilkes-Barre, where he previously served on Church Counsel and the Church Building Committee. Marty was also a member of F&AM Lodge 495 and the Irem Temple Shriners.
Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Florence Claire Gulick; sons, Jonathan Uret (BAE ’99 and AE doctoral candidate), State College; David Wesley (SCI ’01), Philadelphia; daughters, Jennifer Claire (BUS ’03), Arlington, VA.; Sarah Margaret, (begins Penn State in Summer 2005) at home; sisters, Betty Snyder, Ashley; and Karen House, Plymouth Meeting; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Marty will be remembered as a loving husband, caring father, devoted brother, brother-in-law, uncle, dear friend, and dedicated building porfessional. He will be missed by all who knew him.

The AE Department lost another long-time friend, Everett R. McLaughlin, professor emeritus, on October 22, 2004.
He was born March 28, 1918, in Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County, to the late J. Orr and Mary Louise Reed McLaughlin. He left Westmoreland County to attend Westminster College in 1935, where he met his future wife, Lois Elliott, of McKees Rocks. Everett then moved to Penn State in 1936 to finish his education in engineering. He was employed as faculty member in engineering by Penn State in 1941. He retired from the Department of Architectural Engineering as professor emeritus in 1978. He was a member of Sigma Xi, and a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association. In addition to his 38-year career at Penn State, he was an active member of the State College community. He served as president and on the board of directors of the Centre County Historical Society, acted as a docent at the Centre Furnace Mansion, was a long-time member and treasurer of the Civil War Roundtable, was involved in the Centre County Federation of Sportsman's Clubs, served on the board of director's of the Centre Community Hospital, and was an active member of the State College Presbyterian Church since 1936.
He is survived by his sons, Elliott R. McLaughlin, of State College, and Robert L. McLaughlin, of Howard; a daughter, Pamela J. Harner, of State College; four grandchildren, Todd Harner, of Akron, OH, Christopher Harner, of State College, Douglas McLaughlin, of Northridge, CA., and Lisa McLaughlin, of State College; four great-grandchildren, Elena, Tatum and Clayton Harner and Emma McLaughlin; and a sister, Ethel Streator, of Strattanville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois. Everett R. McLaughlin will be missed by members of the Penn State and State College communities. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, in memory of Everett McLaughlin, the State College Presbyterian Church, or to the Centre County Historical Society.
