AE LIGHTING COURSE ON THE WORLD CAMPUS WINS TWO INTERNATIONAL AWARDS
AE Newsletter - Spring/Summer 2000
At the Lightfair International 2000 Conference held in New York City on May 9-11, 2000, the AE Daylighting course (AE 565) developed for the World Campus received two prestigious awards: the Category Innovator Award (Publications/Research/Other category) and the Judge’s Citation Award (presented annually to new products that meet and exceed the current challenges of the twenty-first century).

Dr. Richard Mistrick, lead faculty member for the World Campus’s Architectural Lighting courses, said: “This is very exciting for us. The World Campus is the latest in distance learning technology.  It has the potential to revolutionize lighting education for practicing professionals, as well as for college students in building-related degree programs. For the judges to recognize our efforts is very rewarding.”

“Students are taking this course from across the United States and from other countries (two from Mexico and one from Egypt).  Most of our World Campus students could not have received this education any other way. With no other course like this out there, the World Campus truly is servicing the global community.”

Lightfair International 2000 is the largest North American trade show servicing the architectural and commercial lighting industries.  This year’s conference was the largest ever, featuring more than 17,000 architectural, engineering, and design professionals, and approximately 400 exhibiting companies occupying more than 1,100 booths.

The World Campus architectural lighting design courses were developed for professionals who are working in (or hope to be working in) the building and lighting industries. Taught by AE faculty, the courses represent a portion of Penn State’s existing illumination engineering curriculum. Although students will complete a course as a group and interaction between other students and faculty will be promoted, instruction will be delivered through a combination of Internet-based and CD-ROM activities that can be completed independent of time and location, to accommodate student schedules. The courses have been chosen to meet the needs of practicing professionals and provide a coordinated package to enable those already in the lighting industry to enhance their job performance. Credits obtained through these courses can also apply toward a Penn State graduate degree program in Architectural Engineering.  If you would like to obtain more information, please see the World Campus Web site at http://www.worldcampus.psu.edu.  For specific questions, please call (800)-252-3592.
