NEW FACULTY IN AE
We are very pleased to welcome several new faculty and staff members
to the AE Department. We look forward to the unique strengths and
capabilities each of these new team members will add to the AE program.
Dr. Michael
J. Horman, 1994 Bach. Planning & Design (Honors), Property and
Construction, and 2000 Ph.D., Construction Project Management, at the University
of Melbourne, Australia was appointed as Assistant Professor effective
June 2000.
His research interests include the application of the lean production
management approach to building projects, as well as the development of
a computer simulation model to demonstrate the operation of process dynamics.
Prior to joining AE, he was a lecturer in the Faculty of Architecture,
Building and Planning at Melbourne University. Dr. Horman also has
several years of experience as a consultant to the City of Booroondara
(a local council in the Melbourne metropolitan area) and worked in project
and site management capacities in the property services subsidiary of Lend
Lease Group, one of Australia’s largest companies.
Dr. Jelena
Srebric, 1994 B.Eng., M.Eng., Mechanical Engineering, University of
Belgrade, Yugoslavia and 2000 Ph.D., Building Technology, Massachusetts
Institute of Technology joined Penn State AE as Assistant Professor effective
August 2000. She has also been selected by the College of Engineering
to receive the Pearce Development Professorship, a three-year appointment
established to recognize and support outstanding faculty who are beginning
their academic careers.
Her current research combines the detailed study of thermal comfort,
indoor air quality, and energy consumption in buildings using Computational
Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and hourly energy analysis programs. Dr. Srebric
has developed a simplified CFD model for indoor environment simulations
for architects and building engineers.
Dr. David R.
Riley, B.A.E., ’91, Ph.D., ’94, Architectural Engineering, Construction
Management, Penn State University, will join the AE faculty in January
2001 as Associate Professor and will take over as Director of PACE in May
2001. Dr. Riley is currently an Associate Professor of Construction
Management at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA.
In addition, he has served as a consultant, providing project management
and marketing services to general and specialty contractors. He has
also reviewed proposal presentations, assisted in contractor selection
for owners and architecture firms and provided technical presentations
on building methods for designers, contractors, and building officials.
Dr. Riley’s interests include production engineering and management,
lean construction, applications of Internet technology to teaching, and
sustainable building materials.

NEW STAFF MEMBERS
Mr. David B. Thompson joined the staff of the Penn State Facilities
Engineering Institute (PSFEI) in July 2000 as an Environmental Systems
Consultant.
Ms. Suzette C. Poremba joined the AE Administrative Department
in August 2000 as Staff Assistant.
Ms. Kathleen M. Pennebaker joined the Penn State Facilities Engineering
Institute (PSFEI) in August 2000 as Staff Assistant.
PROMOTIONS
Dr. William P. Bahnfleth has been granted tenure and promoted
to the rank of Associate Professor of Architectural Engineering effective
July 1, 2000.
Mr. Paul A. Bowers has been promoted to a non-tenured position
as Assistant Professor of Architectural Engineering effective July 1, 2000.
NEW APPOINTMENT
Dr. Louis F. Geschwindner, will be serving as the Interim Assistant
Dean for Student Services from August 2000 to August 2001, while Dr.
Jean Landa Pytel is serving as an Administrative Fellow in the Provost's
Office. Geschwindner brings experience as the long-time AE Undergraduate
Program Officer and representative from AE to the Engineering Advising
Center, as well as knowledge of the broader curricular and academic/administrative
policies and processes gleaned during his service as Chair of the University
Faculty Senate and the Senate Committee on Curricular Affairs. During
this one-year appointment, he will maintain his current position in the
AE Department on a half-time basis.
Geschwindner’s duties as AE Undergraduate Program Officer will be assumed
by Assistant Professor Moses Ling during this year-long appointment.
PARTINGS
Ms. Diane Collier, Staff Assistant in the AE main office resigned
her position at Penn State effective July 18, 2000. She joined her
husband Gary, who accepted a new position in New Orleans, LA.
Ms. Dana Beveridge, Staff Assistant, left the PSFEI effective
July 21, 2000, transferring to a staff position at the Beaver Campus.
NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
Congratulations to Dr. Linda M. Hanagan and husband Steve on
the birth of their son, James Morley Hanagan, on May 26, 2000. He
joins big sister Cassie, age three.
IPAC MEETING HELD
The Industrial and Professional Advisory Council (IPAC) meetings were
held in the College of Engineering on March 22-24, 2000. AE faculty
and student representatives consulted with five members of industry.
The focus of the discussions was preparation for ABET 2000 and kicking
off the AE campaign.
COMMENCEMENT 2000
Commencement for the College of Engineering was held on May 12, 2000.
Architectural Engineering conferred sixty-three B.A.E. and twelve M.A.E.
degrees. An evening reception was held at the Bryce Jordan Center
for the AE graduates, their guests, and the AE faculty.
AE CAREER FAIR TO BE HELD ON CAMPUS
The next AE Career Fair will be held on
November 7, 2000 at Rec. Hall on Campus.
