Three AE students were selected to receive National
ASHRAE Scholarships. Brandon Harwick received an ASHRAE General
Scholarship, Shannon Appleby was the recipient of the Alwin B. Newton
Scholarship, and Brad Palmisiano received the Duane Hanson Scholarship.
The students were recognized at the AE Senior Banquet held at the Nittany
Lion Inn on April 20, 2001.
Atila Novoselac received an ASHRAE Grant-In-Aid
graduate student award from ASHRAE. He wrote a successful proposal
to ASHRAE and will conduct research under the supervision of Dr. Jelena
Srebric during 2001/2002 academic year. They will report progress
and results to ASHRAE T.C. 5.3 “Room Air Distribution.”
Three Penn State AE teams placed first, second
and as semi-finalist in the Design with Light competition, sponsored by
the IES Philadelphia Section and Grenald Waldron Associates, Narberth,
PA. The fifth-year AE student design projects addressed the lighting
for a Banana Republic store as part of Dr. Richard Mistrick's AE
464 Advanced Architectural Illumination Design course in Fall 2000.
Students received their awards at the Philadelphia IES Awards dinner on
April 19th in Philadelphia, PA, where the winning entries were displayed.
The first-place team members were Xavier Fulbright, Traci Godbey
and
Andrew McNeil; second-place went to Robert Thomas,
Ammar
Mohammed and Michael Kirkpatrick; and the semi-finalist team
consisted of Melissa Goren, Stephen Iski, and Emily Violette.
AE fifth-year students Andrew McNeil and
Xavier
Fulbright won the prestigious Howard Brandston Student Lighting Design
Competition this year. This was a class project in AE 466 taught
by Dr. Richard Mistrick in Fall 2000. The competition receives
entries from within and outside the U.S., and is sponsored by the IESNA
at the national level.
The ASHRAE Student Design Competition entry of
5th year AE students Anne Martin, Jason Moyer and Jeremy
Snyder in the HVAC System Selection category has been awarded 2nd place
in Society-wide competition. A representative of the team, which
was advised by Dr. William Bahnfleth, will be recognized and give
a poster presentation at the Student Breakfast at the January 2002 Winter
Annual Meeting of ASHRAE in Atlantic City, NJ.
Graduate student Eric Peyer received a
$4,000 grant in October 2000 from the American Public Power Association
in support of his proposal "An Investigation into the Design and Performance
of Chilled Water Plants with Variable Primary Flow." The award provides
partial support for his M.S. thesis research under the supervision of Dr.
William Bahnfleth.
