The
Architectural Engineering Department is pleased to welcome Dr. Mark
Brown as a postdoctoral fellow. Dr. Brown earned a Ph.D. in History
of Art and Architecture from the University of Pittsburgh and has held
academic appointments at Indiana University-Bloomington and Earlham College.
He has a particular interest in the history of American architecture and
technology. He is being funded by the National Science Foundation’s
Science and Technology Studies program to conduct a two-year coordinated
program of training and research at Penn State University. His research
relates the design of steel mills, including how innovations in steel processing
and materials handling influenced the form of steel mills, and in which
combinations aesthetic, process, and structural decisions entered into
the design and layout of these important industrial facilities. In
order to research these issues effectively, Dr. Brown will receive training
in structural analysis and design under the supervision of Dr. Thomas
E. Boothby. He will be advised by a committee consisting of Dr.
Boothby, Dr. Craig Zabel, Professor and Head, Department of Art
History, Professor Cecilia Rusnak, Department of Landscape Architecture,
and Dr. Harry West, Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering. |
