Architectural Engineering

Visiting Scholars

For a week in April, the AE Department hosted three visiting scholars from Thailand: Professor Chalermwat Tantasavasdi (Deputy Dean and Head of the Architecture Program Faculty of Architecture at Thammasat University), Professor Atch Sreshthaputra, Ph.D. (Faculty of Architecture at Chulalongkorn University), and Professor Chanikarn Yimprayoon (Faculty of Architecture at Kasetsart University). Professor Tantasavasdi delivered a presentation titled, “Nature Discourse: People, Technology, and Architecture,” on April 25, 2005.

On February 14, 2005, Professor Peter Nielsen from the Department of Building Technology and Structural Engineering at Aalborg University in Denmark visited the Indoor Environment Center at the Department of Architectural Engineering.  During his visit, Dr. Nielsen delivered a seminar titled "Computational Fluid Dynamics and Room Air Movement" to an audience of 25 students and faculty.  Four different research laboratory facilities held demonstrations for the distinguished visitor. Dr. Nielsen has written more than 250 papers, articles and chapters in technical books on air movement in rooms, energy flow in buildings, control equipment and integrated product development. His Ph.D. study from 1974 is one of the first examples where prediction based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used in indoor environmental technology.
In addition, Dr. Ashraf Mansour joined the Department for nine months on a Fulbright scholarship from Egypt. He is a researcher and lecturer affiliated with the National Research Center, Cairo, Egypt. His background is in sustainable housing development with a special emphasis on the environmental aspects in low-cost housing in Egypt. At Penn State, Dr. Mansour is studying the thermal performance of sustainable wall materials with Dr. Jelena Srebric.
