AE SWEEPS ASHRAE AND IESNA AWARDS
Former AE seniors Nick Maffeo (‘04, ‘04g), Jason Kramer (‘04), and Dave Peterson (‘04) landed a first-place finish at the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers’ (ASHRAE) 2004 Student Design Competition. The challenge was to design an educational dramatic arts studio in Denver, CO. Under the faculty advisor leadership of Dr. William Bahnfleth, the team chose a regenerative variable-volume dual duct system using an indirect evaporative cooler in conjunction with a direct evaporative cooler with a dual duct system to supply the air.

Penn State teams also wowed judges at the Philadelphia IESNA Design with Light competition and finished in first and second places with their design of a dental training facility originally designed for Dr. Richard Mistrick’s AE 464 class. Congratulations to the first place team of Heather Lion, Shane Semple and Chris Rush, and the second place team of Brian Franco, Kim Morton and Bruce Taylor!

OPEN HOUSE DISPLAY COMPETITION
Student societies from the various departments in the College of Engineering prepared creative and informative displays for the Spring 2005 Open House. Awards were given in several categories. We are proud to say that architectural engineering student societies as a whole received 2nd place (and a nice cash prize!) in the Best Overall Demonstration category. Congratulations to all who participated!

SEDI DI ROMA—AE GOES TO ITALY
In the summer of 2004, fourteen AE undergraduate students spent six weeks in Rome, Italy studying some of the world's most famous architecture.  Organized by the Department of Architecture, students attended two classes daily, visited Pompeii, Florence, and Venice, and earned credits towards both the B.A.E. and a possible minor in Architecture by the end of the session.  In January 2005, these students participated in an exhibit that presented original artwork of their view of Roman architecture.  The program was such a success that 22 AE students are participating this summer.   For more information on the study abroad program in Rome, please visit www.engr.psu.edu/ae/study_abroad/ rome_italy.asp.

STUDENTS TOUR BALTIMORE AND WASHINGTON D.C. CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
Dr. John Messner and Prof. Moses Ling led students on construction site tours in both Baltimore, MD and Washington D.C. this spring. Throughout the weekend, students had the opportunity to visit numerous jobsites and talk to professional construction leaders. Site visits included the John Hopkins Cancer Research Center and Parking Garage, 915 E Street Foundation, Westin Hotel, Newseaum, and Smithsonian Institution Patent Office.

In addition to touring these jobsites, the group also had the opportunity to visit the Building Museum, the National Cathedral, Georgetown, the National Mall, and took the Washington D.C. Monument Tour to see the Lincoln, Vietnam, Korean, Jefferson, and Roosevelt monuments by night. In addition, students could visit popular tourist attractions such as Tyson’s Corner Shopping Center, Chinatown, the Holocaust Museum, the National Mall, and the Smithsonian Museums.

Special thanks to Turner Construction, Summer Consultants, Oncore Construction, Hensel Phelps, and Clark Construction Group for helping to make these trips such a success.

AE THESIS PRESENTATIONS INDUCE MORE THAN JUST STRESS IN SENIORS
Thesis presentations have long been a source of stress among AE seniors.  But none have felt the effects quite as profoundly as Nicole Pawolleck, who gave birth less than 13 hours after she gave her thesis presentation.  Concerned she was going into labor as she prepared to give her presentation, Nicole experienced a different kind of nervousness than that of her fellow students.  Fortunately, her son was patient. Jakob was born on April 9, 2005 at 2:30 a.m.  He weighed 7 lbs. 4 oz. and was 20 inches long.  Nicole, her husband Craig Young, and Jakob are all doing well. The faculty and staff of the AE Department wish the entire family lots of luck and happiness in the future!
