STUDENT HONORS
AE graduate students traveled to Reno, NV in February to participate in the Associated Schools in Construction National Graduate Student Competition. Accompanied by Dr. David Riley, graduate students Chris Magent, Michael Pulaski, and Scott Shaulis competed against eight other student teams from graduate programs in construction management.

Beginning at 7:00 a.m., students were allotted 16 hours to produce a detailed analysis of a project in progress and make recommendations for action to executive members of the problem sponsor, Clark Construction. The following day students presented their solutions to judges.

Despite a late start due to airline delays, Penn State captured third place in the competition with their presentation. The first place was awarded to the University of Washington and second place was Stanford University.

STUDENT FIELD TRIPS
On March 28, 2002, Dr. Martin Moeck coordinated a field trip with members of his lighting class AE 461 to Cleveland, OH. The visit to General Electric’s Lighting Lab in Cleveland, OH, included updates on the latest lamp and lighting technologies.

Assistant Professors Dr. John I. Messner and Mr. Moses Ling accompanied third year students on a weekend field trip to Baltimore and Washington, DC construction projects on March 22-24.

Sites visited included the National Institute of Standards and Technologies, the new DC Convention Center, the National American Indian Museum, and the Botanical Gardens renovation project, all sponsored by the Clark Construction Group. Students ended with a tour of the National Archives renovation project sponsored by Grunley Construction.

In addition, the group had an opportunity to visit the Building Museum, the National Cathedral, Georgetown, as well as the Lincoln, Vietnam, Korean, Jefferson, and Roosevelt monuments by night. Students also had a chance to visit popular sites such as Tyson’s Corner Shopping Center and Chinatown, and enjoyed free time to tour the National Mall, the Smithsonian Museum and the Holocaust Museum.
