Robert Reinhart ’90 is pleased to announce the establishment of Biller Reinhart Structural Group in Tampa, FL. The new company offers services in the design of new buildings and industrial structures, threshold inspection, restoration and renovation of existing buildings and expert witness consultation. Robert and his wife April live in Tampa, FL, and have three children, Mason, Matthew, and Noah. . . . Corey Lehman ’00 BAE, MAE is working as a design engineer at Southland Industries in Long Beach, CA. . . . Jennifer (Check) Henning ’95 and her husband Steve are excited to announce the birth of their son, Adam James, on Nov. 29, 2001. He is rolling over, smiling lots, and keeping them very busy. She is now a full-time, stay-at-home mom, while Steve is still a research engineer for Goodyear. . . . Stephen Gipson, ’78 passed away on Dec. 13, 2000, from lung cancer. . . . James Stephens ’96 and Joyce (Leahy) Stephens ’96 had a son, James Leahy, on Jan. 24, 2002. Jim received his MBA from Nova Southeastern University in July 2001. In October 2001, Jim and Joyce relocated back to Lancaster, PA area where he is a bid/spec manager for Clark Associates. . . . In response to the recent AE Newsletter article about the 9/11 tragedy, Bob Tinstman ’50 wrote, “I felt you and your readers might be interested in how this AE displays his patriotism in Central Texas (photo left taken on Lake Travis just west of Austin).” Thanks for sharing, Bob!. . . Frank Eisenhower ’94 has recently moved to Concord, OH. . . . Marc Bowen ’94 is working for Greenman-Pedersen, Inc., a consulting engineering firm in Scranton, PA, where he is a structural engineer and vice president. Recent projects include a 550,000 sq. ft. research center for Novartis Pharmaceutical Company and a 135,000 sq. ft. lab building at Duke University Medical Center. . . . Dave Simmons ’83 and his wife Louise have three kids, ages 12, 9, and 2, and have recently moved to the Richmond, VA area to start up American Bridge Company’s office in the Mid-Atlantic region. Dave is vice president and head of Virginia operations for the firm. . . . Keith Weitknecht and his wife Holly have a baby daughter, Adeline Sage, born on Jan. 12, 2002. He also says he is working with current AE student, Amy Graver this summer. . . . Christopher Cerino ’95 is still working in New York City with DeSimone Consulting Engineers. He is working on a new Frank Gehry Library at Princeton University. He and his wife Jessica had their first child -Josephine Marie - on October 16, 2001, and she made her first trip to Penn State (above) for the AE Awards Banquet in April. . . . Phillip Elgin ’01 is working as a staff engineer for Barber & Hoffman, Inc. in Cleveland, OH. . . . Matt Tripi ’98 is working for Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. in Arlington, MA. . . .David Featherman ’92 has been recently promoted to program manager at Project Performance Corporation, a consulting firm based in McLean, VA, where he has worked for the past 7-1/2 years. He also received his certification as a project management professional earlier this year. But most importantly, he still plays bass for a rock band, The Shelley Winters Project, which invades cities throughout the Northeast on a regular basis. . . .Mark Scott ’78 is director of Business Development and Marketing with MKK and would like to talk to any AE’s on the west coast, particularly in San Francisco and Seattle, who might be interested in teaming up, partnering or collaborating on medical work. On a more personal note, the fire that has caught the attention of the national press raged 5 miles due west of his home.  When the wind blew in the wrong direction, the smoke was quite thick and nerves were quite short. As of this writing, he was safe. . . . Maria Laborde ’92 joined Eli Lilly & Co. in Indianapolis, IN as a construction engineer in 1992. She has worked in construction management

and facilities engineering for 5 years. She received her MBA from Indiana University in ’96 and later moved to the financial component in Lilly. She is currently in an international assignment in Geneva, Switzerland, as a commercial manager. Football, she says, has a very different meaning in Europe; it is one of the things she misses most about the U.S. - thank goodness for the Internet!. . .Rick Burtt and his wife Kimberly celebrated their first anniversary on June 15. He also recently completed his  first year in graduate school at the University of Colorado. And in September, he’ll reach another milestone – the big “three-oh.” . . .Anthony Scovazzo ’79 announced that his firm, AJS Consulting Engineers located in Alexandria, VA, is now incorporated into a professional corporation. His wife Lillian will graduate from Strayer University in 2002 and his daughter Lillian is a junior at the University of Miami (FL) studying architecture. . . . Danielle (Gnecco) Dempsey ’98 and her husband Sean had a son, Liam Patrick Dempsey, on June 10, 2002. She is still working at Lutron Electronics and living in Allentown. . . . Tom Bellace ’75 co-wrote an article, “Smart Thinking,” that was published in the March 2002 edition of Modern Steel Construction. . . . John Kieser ’70 bought a new house on a lake in NJ and is buildng warehouses for First Industrial. . . . Fred Flesch ’78 is now working at Binkley & Barfield in Houston, leading the Water/Wastewater Group. . . . Mark Swaney ’79 is now working at a biotech company called Tissue Informatics. . . . Paul Scanlon ’74 received a promotion at Baker and Associates and is now responsible for all architecture, building engineering and construction management “east of the Mississippi and north of the Mason-Dixon line.”. . . Ken Robinson ’89 started his own structural engineering firm in 2000: Kenneth B. Robinson & Associates, doing residential, industrial, commercial, and educational structures, as well as design-build. Family still at 5: wife, Brenda, and kids Zack, Melanie, and Jake. He just completed designing and constructing (actually did the work) a 1,200 sq. ft. addition to his home. He’d love to hear from his classmates! . . . David Bernhardt ’92 and Tina (Geschwindner) Bernhardt ’92 have moved. New address is 555 El Dorado Dr., Red Lion, PA 17356. David is now head of the Structural Department at NuTec Design in York, PA. . . . Patricia Davis ’99 is a project engineer (EIT)/technology coordinator for The Prisco Group, serving as a liaison between the electrical and technology departments. Her current projects include the Howell School District $46 million expansion, Dow Jones, and River Vale additions and alterations. . . .Billy Hodges ’95 Grace is walking and about to run, talking and about to be understood. Baby #2 is due on Dec. 17! Denise is still working for Frank Gehry as Project Manager of the Cal Arts Theater project within the Disney Concert Hall site. I stopped teaching lighting, for now, but I look forward to returning to it at a later date. We recently bought our first house in Redondo Beach, CA.

ALUMNI HONORS

The National Science Foundation has awarded the Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award to Jason Weiss, ’95, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering Materials at Purdue University. “The CAREER program is a foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation's most prestigious award for new faculty members. The CAREER program recognizes and supports the early career-development activities of those teacher-scholars who are most likely to become the academic leaders of the 21st century.” The proposal titled Linking Insitu Monitoring with Damage Modeling for Life-Cycle Performance Simulations in the Concrete Infrastructure is expected to impact the concrete materials, sensing, and construction industries by providing improved measures to assess and quantify concrete quality and long-term performance insitu.
