| The Kick-off Seminar for the 2003 AE senior thesis presentations
was held Thursday, May 1, at the Nittany Lion Inn. The seminar, “Information
and Communication Technologies: A Building Industry Perspective,” was
presented by a panel of three speakers from the James G. Davis Construction
Corporation based in Rockville, MD. Michael Pittsman ’92,
project executive; Christopher Scanlon, director of information
technology; and Ronald Juban ’99, project manager led a panel
discussion on the importance of information management within the building
industry.
On a typical construction project, the general contractor is responsible
for brokering information between numerous team members. Increasingly,
contractors are turning to information technology to help manage this
flow of information more effectively, with the ultimate goal of providing
their clients with projects that are built safer, faster, of better
quality, and for less money than previously possible. Many contractors
have quietly implemented new technology initiatives (such as project
administration software) that have made significant differences in the
operations of their company.
Ultimately, the companies that are able to identify trends in technology,
understand the potential impact on their organization, and selectively
choose the right tools at the right time will maintain a sustainable
competitive advantage over their peers.
Special thanks are extended to the seminar presenters, as well William
Moyer ’79, senior vice president, for his help in coordinating this
event. |
